  • The sense of wellness and community. Alissa Kummer
  • Portland is an amazing city with amazing people. Current student
  • Amazing opportunities that the university provides. Current student
  • Apart from the curriculum of OHSU encompassing early clinical experience and a focus on family practice, I need activities outside of medicine to keep me sane through the rigors of medical school. OHSU is located in an area with readily accessible outlets to nature, coffee shops, breweries, nightlife, and art. All of these options appealed to me as a way to remain physically and mentally healthy throughout medical school. Nate Earp, Admissions Liaison Med22
  • Friday exams which means weekends can be relaxing, Pass/No-pass grading which means peers are not competing against each other, the pacific northwest is beautiful (plethora of hikes and opportunities to escape into nature), highly ranked in research and primary care, and close to home. - Current student
  • The camaraderie among my classmates is amazing! I am appreciative of the fact that we all support each other by sharing study resources, checking in on each other when we all get stressed, and advocating for student needs (i.e. childcare, standing desk, etc). I think this is all due to the fact that we have a pass-fail curriculum for preclinical years and the school's emphasis on wellness.Current Student
  • Supportive students who care about one another. Alissa Kummer
  • One of my favorite parts about being at OHSU is the sense of community. I feel supported by my classmates and the class above me. As students we also get a coach who helps guide us academically and a cohort of peers with similar career interests. Lori Hursh
  • The inclusive and supportive nature of the school is my favorite part. Everyone is very welcoming and willing to support me in any way that I may need. Current student
  • I truly enjoy the camaraderie built amongst the students in my class. Due to the fact that our classes are pass-fail and there is no rating system for the first 18 months, every student is more than willing to help someone struggling and offer their study resources. This has helped foster an environment of collaboration for which I am more than grateful. Nate Earp, Admissions Liaison Med22
  • The collaborative academic environment, the faculty so willing to help and improve our experience, the tutors (generally the entire upperclassman relationship with the M1s), and the availability of "time off" during weeks of enrichment and the weekends after Examsoft. Having a welcoming and warm community and the amount of time off that we do makes this medical school experience unique. I feel like I am beginning to train for a life as a physician that is balanced and supported. Meghan Vandewettering
  • My classmates are very supportive and non-competitive. I love that we share study resources with one another through our Facebook group page. My peers also reach out to one another when needed. Current student
  • I'm a big coffee drinker and it just so happens that Portland is one of the best places for this! Some of my favorite places to study at are Ovation Coffee, Portland Coffee Roasters, Coava Coffee Roasters, Sisters Coffee Company and Nossa Familia Coffee. –Isabelle Nguyen
  • One of my favorite things to do in Portland is to go on runs in Forest Park or along the waterfront. For non-runners / walkers, 23rd street in west Portland has a bunch of adorable shops and places to eat. Salt and Straw on 23rd is where you can find pear and blue cheese ice cream! If you live closer to north Portland, I recommend N Mississippi Ave for food and shops. If you haven't already experienced "brunch culture" in Portland, I highly recommend it. There are tons of great spots like Screen Door, Tasty and Sons, Mothers, etc. Finally, if you have a car, I recommend driving to the gorge or to the beach for a beautiful hike! – Lori Hursh
  • There are a lot of great hikes within and just outside of Portland. The gorge is great, but if you don't have time to go all of the way out there, try the hike up to Pittock Mansion from Lower Macleay Trailhead. This is a short, mild hike that I beautiful and ends with a great view of the city! – Current student
  • Within the city, I love Rimsky-Korsakoffee House for a quirky, eclectic coffee and dessert place in the evening. During the day, I always enjoy a quick jaunt over to Pittock mansion for a beautiful view of Portland. If I have a moment to get out of the city for a good hike, I would always recommend Latourell Falls or Bridal Veil Falls in the Columbia Gorge. On the Washington side of the gorge, just a bit further away than the aforementioned hikes and a little more difficult, I would recommend Dog Mountain or Cape Horn as great hikes. Nate Earp, Admissions Liaison Med22
  • Hiking in Forest Park in the fall as the leaves are changing is a beautiful way to escape the city and feel surrounded by nature. Grabbing a hot cinnamon tea at Tea Chai Te and walking around NW 23rd at night in the winter is beautiful, the twinkle lights and families picking up holiday gifts is the best thing to get yourself in a wintery mood! In the spring, a bike ride in the Ladd's Addition is the best way to see an old neighborhood of Portland bursting with color and lushness! The trees are so low and abundant that you won't be able to see the clouds. Seeing the wild flowers on Mt. Hood in the springtime is amazing too. When it's warm, bringing a cooler of snacks and a good book to the Sauvie Island beaches and hanging out is a summer staple. Meghan Vandewettering
