Education at OHSU

Simulation Centers at OHSU

OHSU nursing students practice clinical skills at multiple simulation stations with manikins throughout the simulation skills lab.

OHSU simulation centers provide hands-on clinical training for students, residents and fellows across nursing, medicine, pharmacy and other health programs. You’ll use a range of simulations to practice patient care and procedures in realistic environments that prepare you for real clinical settings.

Mark Richardson Interprofessional Simulation Center (20,000 sq ft)

A control room in the Mark Richardson Interprofessional Simulation Center at OHSU, with multiple monitors displaying patient vitals and simulation software, overlooking a simulated operating room through an observation window.

The Mark Richardson Center on the Portland waterfront hosts simulations in realistic hospital and clinic settings. The  center has two floors featuring classrooms, skills labs, exam rooms and more.

Learning spaces, skills labs and suites

  • Two multi-purpose classrooms
  • Seven debrief rooms
  • Three medication rooms
  • Seven-bed skills training lab
  • Eight state-of-the-art simulation suites (theaters), including:
    • Medical-surgical rooms
    • Labor and delivery room
    • Operating room and emergency room
    • Post anesthesia care unit
    • Pediatric intensive care unit
    • Medical ICU consultation room
    • Home settings
    • 20 clinical exam rooms

All rooms have audio and video capabilities that allow for projection and recording throughout the center. Staff can easily modify all suites and classrooms to meet a wide range of learning, teaching and networking goals.

VirtuOHSU Simulation and Surgical Training Center (7,500 sq ft)

A simulated operating room at the VirtuOHSU Simulation and Surgical Training Center, equipped with a draped procedure table, overhead surgical lighting and medical supply stations.

The VirtuOHSU Simulation and Surgical Training Center on Portland's Marquam Hill trains students on technical skills, invasive procedures and clinical anatomy. You'll practice surgical, endoscopy and minimally invasive procedures in immersive skills labs with virtual reality and robotic platforms. The center includes specialized spaces for microsurgery, anatomy dissection and laparoscopic training.

Learning spaces, skills labs and suites

  • 70-seat amphitheater with full audio-visual and conferencing capabilities
  • 18 24-seat classrooms with SMART boards
  • Lab A: 16-table anatomy dissection lab or eight-station simulated operating room
  • Lab B: Two-station simulated operating room
  • Lab C: Microsurgery suite with eight Zeiss microscopes
  • Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) training suite, including:
    • 10 laparoscopy stations
    • One laparoscopic VR simulator
    • One endoscopic/bronchoscopic VR simulator
    • One da Vinci Robot VR simulator

Multnomah Pavillion Simulation Center (7,500 sq ft)

Multiple patient care stations equipped with adult manikins, monitors and medical supply carts in the Multnomah Pavilion Simulation Center at OHSU.

The Multnomah Pavilion (MNP) Simulation Center on Portland’s Marquam Hill provides realistic clinical environments for patient care and procedural training.

Statewide simulation and clinical learning centers

An OHSU nursing student in scrubs performs a bedside care skill on a patient manikin in a simulation lab.

OHSU operates simulation centers across Oregon to expand access to clinical training beyond Portland. Each center features expert faculty and community partners who guide students through high-quality, hands-on simulation experiences. Statewide centers support learning for students and health professionals while building partnerships with rural and underserved communities.

OHSU also delivers in situ simulation at clinical sites statewide, bringing interprofessional training directly into hospital units and community settings.

OHSU’s Statewide Simulation and Clinical Learning Centers are recognized as a Laerdal Center of Education Excellence

Klamath Falls simulation at Sky Lakes Collaborative Health Center
