The Student Health and Wellness Center offers a full range of primary care services and can serve as your medical home while you are at OHSU. We see OHSU students, students' spouses/domestic partners and children 18 or older, and postdoctoral scholars. All patients must carry major medical insurance to be seen at SHW (this includes the Student Health Insurance Plan, the Oregon Health Plan, and many others).

Services and areas of treatment include
Standard primary care services such as preventative care, treatment for acute injuries or illnesses, and care for chronic conditions are available.
Student Health provides a variety of sexual and reproductive health services, including:
- Well-woman exams (including Pap tests)
- STI screening, testing and treatment
- Contraception counseling, contraception prescriptions
- In-office contraceptive procedures (Nexplanon and IUDs)
- Urine pregnancy testing
- Pre-conception counseling and early prenatal care
- Pregnancy options counseling
- HPV vaccination series - the three vaccine series (Gardisil 9) is covered at no cost, regardless of insurance, for all genders through 45 years of age
- Pre-exposure prophylaxis medication (PrEP) counseling and prescriptions
- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner services
Costs: The cost of each screening test and birth control method depends on your insurance coverage, but we can help you select a cost-effective method that is right for you. In some cases, depending on your particular insurance plan, it may be more cost-effective to seek services at locations such as Planned Parenthood or the Multnomah County STD Clinic. If we cannot provide a service that you need, we will assist you in finding an alternate service provider in the community.
Chaperone policy: Student Health is committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for our community. We recognize that sensitive exams are times when this commitment is especially important. Thus, the clinic provides trained chaperones (SHW staff members with special training to support during sensitive medical exams or procedures). All of our primary care providers are skilled at providing general primary care, urgent care, and preventive care for our transgender and gender diverse communities. Jodi DeMunter, M.D., offers treatment for patients interested in discussing a transition to hormone therapy or for the ongoing maintenance of hormone therapy. She works closely with other OHSU clinicians to provide additional resources and consultation when needed, including referrals for gender-affirming surgical care if/as desired.

Student Health offers consultation for travel-related services to help you have a safe experience when visiting areas of the world with higher risk for certain serious health conditions.
We can assist you with:
- Pre-travel consultations
- Travel-related vaccinations and prophylactic medications
- Post-travel visits to evaluate and treat illnesses
Pre-Travel Consultation Appointment
Looking to travel out of the country in the coming months? Call us at 503-494-8665 to schedule a consultation appointment. As many vaccines and medications needed prior to overseas travel require advance treatment to be effective, please be sure to schedule any pre-travel-related appointments weeks to months in advance.

- Office visits for pre-travel and post-travel are free (Student Health will bill your insurance and cover any remaining costs)
- Travel-related vaccinations and prophylactic medications are NOT covered by Student Health and are subject to your insurance coverage. It is your responsibility to be aware of these potential costs and your insurance benefits.

Refill requests on previously prescribed medications are an important part of the ongoing care Student Health provides for our patients. Please plan ahead and allow at least 48 to 72 business hours for this process.
If you are new to Student Health, please make an appointment to get started. We are not able to refill prescriptions prescribed by other providers without seeing you first and discussing your health care.
Our after-hours nurse call line is not able to refill prescriptions.
To obtain a prescription refill:
- Call your pharmacy first to ask for a refill request. This is an integral part of the process to minimize prescribing and dosing errors.
- The pharmacy will then fax us the refill request.
- We will review requests within 1-2 business days from the date of receipt. This means a request made on Friday may not reach us until Monday.
Refill requests may be denied if we have not seen or monitored you for your condition for a certain period of time, depending upon the particular health condition. We will communicate with you regarding any reasons for denial or the need for a follow-up visit prior to refilling. Keep in mind that controlled substances require signed prescriptions by law and cannot be filled without a patient encounter. Please review the Student Health controlled substance contract if your medication falls within this category.

Student Health providers can make referrals to other clinics and providers if you need specialty care or other care outside of our clinic.

Time is crucial. All exposures should be assessed for risk factors as soon as possible and definitely no later than 24 hours regardless of risk. If there are questions on whether or not an exposure has occurred, please report and seek care.
If you have a possible exposure:
- Immediately wash the exposure site
- Notify your instructor at the time of the exposure
- Call or go to the Student Health and Wellness Center. If for any reason Student Health is not available, go to the Emergency Room.
All OHSU students and postdoctoral fellows who have occupational exposure to blood or body substances or other communicable diseases are to seek treatment and document the exposure via the Worker and Student Injury Reporting System.
It is the responsibility of the student and/or postdoctoral fellow's supervisor or instructor to relieve the student/postdoc from their current assignment to allow for prompt post-exposure assessment and treatment as needed.
Our Primary Care team includes a Physician, a Nurse Practitioner, a Nurse Practitioner/Acupuncturist, and a Physician Assistant. Your primary care provider will assess your concerns and address them directly, order diagnostic services such as laboratory or imaging studies when indicated, and if necessary refer you to specialty services at OHSU or in the community.
Billing and Fees for Primary Care
Most primary care services done at Student Health are billed to your insurance, but have no out-of-pocket cost to you, regardless of insurance. Some exceptions apply, such as pre-entrance or travel vaccines, labs, imaging, referrals to specialists, and any care performed outside of Student Health. These services are subject to your insurance coverage and any remaining balance would be your responsibility. Visit our Fees and Billing page for more information, and remember that it is your responsibility to ask about costs for your particular situation prior to services being performed.
Integration with Behavioral Health Services
If the concerns you are experiencing have an emotional or behavioral health component, our primary care providers may consider a referral to one of our Behavioral Health providers. If you seek counseling, you can request an appointment with one of our psychologists or psychiatrists without first seeing the primary care staff.
