Dear Students and Friends,

Greetings and welcome to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Nursing. I joined this school because of its well-known and ongoing contributions to nursing education, practice, and research, perhaps similarly to why you have chosen OHSU. Here you will have opportunities to learn among knowledgeable experts and I encourage you to fully engage in maximizing your experience by connecting with these nursing leaders, clinicians, teachers, and researchers who are committed to improving health and health care.

Health care is in the spotlight as we focus on the multitude of challenges needed to improve access, quality, and outcomes while minimizing costs. Nurses are a major part of the health care workforce, providing leadership and services across all settings and in collaboration with other health care providers. The demand for highly-qualified nurses in leadership roles, clinical care, teaching, and research are expected to continue growing as we seek to address these challenges. Nurses are central to the success of health care teams where providers from multiple health professions partner to optimize care. OHSU recognizes the importance of and is committed to interprofessional education, practice, and research.

Congratulations on joining this vibrant and intellectual community. Your accomplishments to date and promise for the future indicate your ability to take advantage of what OHSU offers and to make a difference professionally as a graduate.

My best wishes for your success.

Warm regards,

Susan Bakewell-Sachs, Ph.D., RN, FAAN
