Why visit JBT?

  • Primary Care: JBT offers a full range of primary care services and can serve as the medical home for students, their adult dependents (spouses, domestic partners, and children over 18), and postdoctoral scholars during their time at OHSU. Our board-certified physician and nurse practitioners offer care for acute illnesses and injuries, chronic conditions, reproductive health, transgender health and pre and post-travel immunizations and treatment. They also provide care following a blood or body fluid exposure. Same-day and next-day appointments are often available.

  • Behavioral Health: Mental and emotional health is a critical part of overall well-being. JBT’s behavioral health providers offer individual counseling, medication management and couples counseling. Teletherapy options are available for established patients needing counseling support during off campus rotations.

  • Integrative Medicine: JBT offers integrative medicine such as acupuncture services as well as one free massage per student.

  • Wellness: A variety of wellness and prevention offerings are available, including talks and workshops on stress management, mindfulness, resilience and other topics as requested. There is also an ongoing mindfulness and group acupuncture drop-in series, Refuel at Noon, held at both the Robertson Life Sciences Building and on Marquam Hill.

  • Confidentiality:  JBT is committed to protecting the confidentiality of student health information. JBT functions as an independent health clinic distinct from academic and/or research programs, and electronic medical records are kept behind a special firewall (similar to psychiatric records). Providers do not work in any capacity where they could grade or evaluate students or postdoctoral scholars.

  • Affordability: Most services provided at JBT are free, including primary care office visits, behavioral health appointments and wellness events. Some exceptions apply, such as travel immunizations, lab work or imaging, referrals to specialists or any care performed outside of JBT, acupuncture for those without the Student Health Insurance Plan, etc.

  • Student Health Insurance Plan: JBT and OHSU’s Human Resources department together oversee the management of the university-sponsored student health insurance plan. For more information, visit the student health insurance website, call 503-494-7617, option 4 or email studentinsurance@ohsu.edu

Eligibility

OHSU students in degree and certificate training programs that pay the OHSU University Fee and postdoctoral scholars have access to JBT services. Adult dependents (spouse, domestic partner or children over age 18) of OHSU students can also access primary care services as long as the dependents have verified insurance.

New student requirements

Before starting your OHSU program, you will need to meet all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) immunization guidelines for health care workers. These are meant to provide a safe environment for students, employees and patients at OHSU and participating clinical and research training sites. OHSU requires the following:

*Begin your Hepatitis B immunization series as soon as possible, since it takes 7 months to complete if you are starting from scratch. Three shots and an antibody titer showing immunity are required.

*The OHSU student health services provided through Joseph B. Trainer (JBT) cannot offer assistance with pre-entrance immunization requirements. One exception is that if you have already initiated the Hepatitis B series and establish with a JBT primary care provider, then JBT may provide the remaining vaccinations and titer. Unlike most of our services, you will be responsible for covering any costs not covered by insurance (including copays or deductibles). Please make sure you understand any out-of-pocket costs and ask if you have any questions prior to receiving services to avoid receiving any unexpected bills.

*You MUST complete these requirements prior to the deadline. If you have not completed them by 14 days after matriculation, a $95 fee will be charged. If you are not compliant with all requirements within 30 days, a hold will be placed on your student account that will suspend your student status and prevent you from registering and attending classes.

OHSU requires all eligible students to carry major medical and dental insurance for every day they are here.

Option A: Student Health Insurance Plan

OHSU will automatically enroll you in the current student health insurance plan with PacificSource and the associated fees will be added to your student account. Your coverage will begin with the 1st day of the term period in which you are registered.

Option B: Comparable coverage and approved waiver

If you already have comparable health insurance and want to continue it while at OHSU, you must apply and be approved for a waiver to avoid being automatically enrolled in and charged for the Student Health Insurance Plan. Please review the OHSU waiver requirements before you apply. Waivers are submitted via a secure online system.

Please note:

  • There are separate waivers for major medical and dental.
  • There is a strict deadline for submitting your waiver. The completed waiver application must be received by USI, our insurance broker, by the waiver deadline that is specified each term. This deadline is in alignment with the registrar's 100% refund date. If you miss the deadline, you will need to wait until the following term to apply for a waiver.
  • Waivers expire at the end of each academic year (typically September). You will need to re-apply each year if you continue to have comparable coverage.

You will first need to register as a patient at OHSU in order to be seen at our clinic.

Call patient registration at 503-494-8505 and tell them you are either an OHSU student or an OHSU postdoctoral fellow.

Call 503-494-8665, Option 1 to schedule an appointment.

You are eligible to begin accessing student health services at the start of the insurance term period, regardless of whether you have the Student Health Insurance Plan or have waived out.

Returning student requirements

You are responsible for ensuring that your flu shot and TB test are done and documented annually, regardless of whether you have patient contact.

Annual flu shots and TB tests can be administered at Joseph B. Trainer Health and Wellness Center at no charge for currently enrolled students.

Screening for compliance: JBT primary care staff will screen for compliance at each visit, but ultimately it is your responsibility to maintain compliance. JBT runs compliance reports early on in each term and will communicate with any student who has an expired TB. If the student is not compliant within 30 days of receipt of this notice, their respective associate dean or program director will be notified of the noncompliance. The student will then have 15 days to rectify the issue. If not rectified, a hold will be placed on the student account which will prevent the student's ability to register for further coursework.

Away rotations: We are happy to work with students on away rotations who receive such a notice. We can accept results of TB skin tests administered elsewhere that are scanned and emailed or faxed. In addition, the CDC may adopt new vaccine or immunization guidelines which could require JBT to contact existing students to become compliant with new guidelines. Should this occur during a student's academic career at OHSU, we will issue new guidelines with adequate timelines to ensure the student's safety as well as compliance.

*Confidentiality and reporting of compliance: JBT is charged with overseeing overall campus health. In accordance with federal (FERPA) guidelines and OR SB1558, students submitting the Immune Status Form agree to allow JBT to share compliance-only information with your academic program. Only the designation of compliant or not compliant is shared with your academic program.
