About me

I am a surgeon who specializes in treating:

Colon, rectal and anal cancer are potentially curable for many, if not most, people. I provide custom care for each patient. Whether I’m seeing you for your first visit or a second opinion, I will learn what is important to you and make sure you understand your cancer and all treatment options.

For other conditions, I treat each patient individually, working with you to find the best treatment for your symptoms. We can often do this with office treatments and without surgery.

I joined OHSU in 2005. I am part of the OHSU Digestive Health Center and the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute.

My research interests include:

  • Treatment of rectal cancer without surgery
  • Hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes such as Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)

I started the state’s first colorectal cancer registry and have worked with other researchers at OHSU to continue our leadership in colorectal cancer research.

I am committed to providing top-quality individual care to each patient. Because of this, I’ve been recognized as one of “Portland’s Top Doctors" and one of "America’s Top Surgeons.”

Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment

  1. Check your network. If you have health insurance,  call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
  2. Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.

If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.

Visit our billing and insurance page for more information.

  27. Dr. Herzig was the most professional doctor I've interacted with regarding these issues. He not only made me feel comfortable, but made sure my concerns as a queer person were addressed with zero stress or discrimination (this has been something I've had issues with in the past.). I'd hands down recommend Dr. Herzig to anyone who's facing similar issues and intend to do so.

  28. Efficient & nice.

  29. Sadly there is no way to ask questions to the doctor who performed my colonoscopy via MyChart. I have to ask a nurse to ask the doctor then wait for the nurse to receive an answer and then reply to me. If further explanation is needed this convoluted process seem ridiculous. Asking questions while recovering from anesthesia and remember the answers provided is a waste of everybody's time. At tis point I doubt If I would recognize the doctor If he was standing next to me In the grocery store

  30. Very positive
