Renal pathology services

OHSU has offered comprehensive renal pathology services locally and to communities in Oregon and Southwest Washington since the 1970s. Board-certified pathologists with formal training in nephrology and immunopathology provide timely preliminary information and progress reports on current cases.

Services we offer

We provide a full complement of renal pathology services, unique among labs in Oregon, including:

  • Native and allograft kidney biopsies
  • Light microscopy, immunofluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy
  • Electron microscopy. This is not required for allograft renal insufficiency evaluation, but recommended if the patient has hematuria, proteinuria, or other glomerular disease evidence
  • Additional IHC and in-situ hybridization for infectious, infiltrative and hereditary renal diseases
  • Outside consultation on blocks or slides from renal biopsies, nephrectomies and autopsy cases

How we report results

Preliminary findings are based on the light microscopy findings usually provided by phone to the referring nephrologist or pathologist. A written preliminary report (pending electron microscopy) is available on request. Written final reports are provided for all consultations. Contact us to arrange to have your reports automatically faxed to a secure (office) site after it is signed.

Recommended fixatives

Please contact us if you would like us to supply these fixatives.

For light microscopy (LM):

  • 10% aqueous formaldehyde (formalin). This is readily available in most pathology laboratories.
  • Paraformaldehyde and Carnoy's fixative are also satisfactory.

For immunofluorescence (IF) microscopy:

  • Michel's fixative (Modified Michel's Tissue Fixative from Wampole Laboratories, Cranbury, N.J.)

Electron microscopy (EM)

  • 2-3% glutaraldehyde
  • Paraformaldehyde is also suitable
