About me

Daniel B. Nelson, M.D., MPP, is a primary care internal medicine doctor and assistant professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Nelson's research centers on health insurance coverage for low-income and vulnerable populations in the United States, with a special focus on the administrative burdens faced by those eligible for Medicaid.

Dr. Nelson received a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from Brigham Young University. He received a medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and a master's degree in public policy from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. After completing clinical training in the Brigham and Women's Hospital/Atrius Health primary care internal medicine residency program, he was a general internal medicine fellow in the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is board-certified in internal medicine.

He says of his approach to patient care: "I enjoy developing relationships with patients over time. I sincerely appreciate them welcoming me—in a small way—into their lives to help care for their health."

Outside of work, Dr. Nelson says: "I love eating delicious food, rock climbing, backpacking, supporting Manchester United, or generally doing anything with my family."

Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment

  1. Check your network. If you have health insurance,  call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
  2. Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.

If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.

Visit our billing and insurance page for more information.
