About me
I am a palliative care doctor. This means I provide comprehensive care for patients with cancer and other serious illnesses that includes:
- Symptom management
- Advanced care planning
- Psychosocial support for patients and their loved ones
My goal is to integrate physical, mental, emotional and spiritual care for my patients. I am especially interested in listening to the stories of patients, a practice which frequently leaves me awestruck by the grace, kindness and humanity of the patients I care for.
Driven by a desire for deeper connection with my patients, I completed the OHSU Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship and served as a hospice medical director for a local non-profit hospice for several years before returning to OHSU to provide outpatient palliative care.
My passion for health and healing sprouted from the ground up when I left Tennessee to study organic farming at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. At Evergreen, I discovered a love for science and natural medicine and enrolled at Bastyr University in Seattle. Though life took me in other directions, my experiences at Evergreen and Bastyr crystalized my interest in providing care for the whole person, leading me to become a licensed massage therapist and then an osteopathic doctor.
After completing training in Internal Medicine at OHSU, I stayed on as a Chief Resident and then a hospitalist. While working in the hospital, I witnessed the challenges and fragmentation that can arise in modern healthcare and saw the importance of palliative care in helping support patients and families through these often-difficult experiences.
I have been happy to call the Pacific Northwest home since 1992. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife reading, watching movies and caring for two elderly cats.
