About me

I am a hematologist-oncologist and professor of medicine with a long history of focusing on the care of patients with blood cancers. I specialize in blood and marrow transplantation and immunotherapy, including CAR T-cell therapy.

I have been involved in clinical investigation and translational research for nearly four decades. I began in 1981 with research and clinical training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, affiliates of the Harvard Medical School. In 1991, I moved to OHSU to develop a transplantation immunology research program and to facilitate the development of stem cell transplantation in Oregon. Since 1994, I have served as the medical director of OHSU’s Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant program for adults, which has treated nearly 5,000 patients.

I have served as principal investigator or co-investigator on over 200 clinical trials, including many sponsored by national transplant organizations. These trials have focused on transplantation and recently on CAR T-cells and other cell therapies. These efforts included contributions that led to FDA approval for tisagenlecleucel (Kymriah), one of the first two CAR T-cell therapies for adults with lymphoma.

At OHSU, my research has focused on transplantation immunology, particularly reducing GVHD-related complications.

Most recently, my focus has been on the toxicity and efficacy of immune effector cell therapies such as CAR T-cells, again focused on blood cancers, but also beginning to investigate these therapies’ ability to treat patients with solid tumor cancers and autoimmune disorders.

One of my special interests focuses on the intersection of transplantation and health policy. I have been involved locally, regionally and nationally on improving access to care. I have been named to the Executive Committee of the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, currently as vice president. When I assume the president’s role, our focus will be on pursuing the goal that all patients in need can get the appropriate transplant and cell therapy care for their condition.

Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment

  1. Check your network. If you have health insurance,  call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
  2. Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.

If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.

Visit our billing and insurance page for more information.
