About me

Dr. Matthew Blackburn provides care for patients with various types of cancer, such as gastrointestinal, lung and breast cancer, by using immunotherapy, chemotherapy and, in some cases, clinical trial medications. He has a special interest in the treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. He also treats hematologic malignancies and other non-malignant blood disorders.

Dr. Blackburn’s approach to patient care is rooted in a holistic and patient-centered philosophy that places equal importance on both the medical aspects of cancer care as well as the emotional, psychological and overall well-being of each person. He firmly believes that clear and open communication is essential to ensure patients have a comprehensive understanding of their illness and the available treatment options. He finds immense fulfillment in listening to patients’ stories about their passions, loved ones and their hopes and dreams for the future. This perspective allows him to better understand and support their treatment decisions. Dr. Blackburn feels that it is an honor to be part of his patients’ lives and to build meaningful connections with them as they navigate this challenging chapter in their lives.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his husband and dog, hiking, biking and travel. He is excited to experience all that Portland and the Pacific Northwest have to offer.

  9. Dr Blackburn was very personable. Good communicator. Obviously knowledgeable in his specialty and clearly loves what he does. Went beyond his usual routine and kindly removed a suture poking out of my incision!

Well,I could not hear him even though the pre test for audio was fine.So he called me and said,"Well I have had 6 virtual appointments today and you are only the second one who has had a problem...I know it's not me". Yeah,he made me feel really stupid, After the virtual appointment I felt pretty crummy.The questions I asked about the chest CT results I felt were just dismissed.

  15. Dr.. Blackburn is friendly and focused. We connect easily, but the combination of my hearing loss and OHSU clinicians' wearing of masks is a serious ongoing impediment to clear communication. I'm sensitive to doctors' time constraints, so Instead of asking for multiple repetitions I often settle for a "good enough" understanding of what's being said. If the mask Is optional in a given setting, I'd appreciate knowing that so I can request open-faced communication.

  16. I was extremely pleased with my appointment with Dr Blackburn. He totally understood and listened to my long-term objectives concerning my health and any furure procedures.

  21. Dr. Blackburn listens and explained the medication that I take. I had terrible side effects with two meds and was ready to stop taking any. He told me it is my decision but reminded me that I had invasive cells in my tumor. Gently suggested I try another medication. I could decide when. I saw how important it was so agreed to try one more med. Glad I did! I have no side effects after 3 months. I trust him and feel he really cares.
