About me

I am a surgeon who specializes in treating:

Colon, rectal and anal cancer are potentially curable for many, if not most, people. I provide custom care for each patient. Whether I’m seeing you for your first visit or a second opinion, I will learn what is important to you and make sure you understand your cancer and all treatment options.

For other conditions, I treat each patient individually, working with you to find the best treatment for your symptoms. We can often do this with office treatments and without surgery.

I joined OHSU in 2005. I am part of the OHSU Digestive Health Center and the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute.

My research interests include:

  • Treatment of rectal cancer without surgery
  • Hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes such as Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)

I started the state’s first colorectal cancer registry and have worked with other researchers at OHSU to continue our leadership in colorectal cancer research.

I am committed to providing top-quality individual care to each patient. Because of this, I’ve been recognized as one of “Portland’s Top Doctors" and one of "America’s Top Surgeons.”

Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment

  1. Check your network. If you have health insurance,  call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
  2. Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.

If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.

Visit our billing and insurance page for more information.

  10. Dr. Herzig was very professional, explained things thoroughly and helped me understand the plan and mhy options. Was very impressed with his knowledge, concern and ability to relate information. Left his office confident in his ability, the process and the plan.

  11. Dr. Herzog is such a compassionate doctor. Even when the news is dreadful he makes you feel very comfortable and at peace with the treatments/surgeries he is performing.

  12. Dr Herzig is amazing. He listened to all of my concerns and answered my questions. He does not put his ego first. I appreciate a doctor who is confident enough in his own skills to tell you the truth and not sugar coat the issues. He has already looked into my case and knew the ins and outs. I really appreciate my visit.

  13. He is matter-of-fact (no BS, but friendly). He was encouraging, but not overly optimistic. I found him knowledgeable and someone I wanted to help with my medical needs.

  14. Very friendly personable ,great communication skills I never felt rushed or herded. Top Notch .

  15. He's one of the best doctors I've been to. Very supportive, and thorough.

  17. I've been seeing Dr. Herzig for a couple of years now, and he truly cares. I appreciate how much he tries to help move the needle for patients, especially with navigating complicated things like insurance and approvals, and he always makes sure all my questions are answered.

  21. Addressed all of my questions in an easy to understand way which was appreciated.

  22. He was very clear and made my comfort the priority of the visit not only during the appointment but also in his advice. He also was accepting of my sexual orientation and concerns regarding sexual intercourse. This has NOT been my experience in the past with all colorectal physicians.

  23. Was very impressed with Dr. Herzig's knowledge. He answered all my questions and gave me a thorough explanation of possible factors underlying my condition. He was conservative in his approach and wanted more tests done to help determine treatment. This was in contrast to another recommended surgeon at another facility as well as advice from my GI Doctor. I am very pleased to have waited to see Dr. Herzig.

  24. Detailed, caring, compassionate, knowledgeable.

  25. I was very well taken care of.

  26. Dr Herzig is awesome. Very thorough in he explanations, questions, showing previous scans in explaining and also willing to think outside the box. He is understanding, caring, gives a very good idea of the pros and cons, and lets me decide. Even though the subject matter is stressful for me to deal with, I felt at ease and trusted his solutions. He had read me file beforehand, and was willing to look up other Drs info etc. I have met with Dr Herzig a few years ago and liked his suggestions then... But more so now, since I have more complications in other areas.

  27. Always spot on

  28. I've been a patient of Dr Herzig since 2011. I have a great relationship with him and trust him with my care.

  29. Dr Herzig always makes me feel comfortable and listens and explains things to me in a way I can understand. I appreciate him immensely.

  30. Dr. Herzig seems to be highly competent, efficient, and knowledgeable. He is also very friendly. I liked him.
