About me

Biography:  I am a family doctor who cares for people of all ages, in all sorts of settings. This includes serving patients in my primary care clinic at OHSU Richmond, in a telehealth clinic for transgender adults seeking support with hormone therapy and patients admitted to the hospital.  I grew up in San Francisco, studied contemporary American literature at Stanford, earned my medical degree (MD) at UCSF and moved to Portland for my residency in Family Medicine.  I have been at OHSU since 2005 and am proud to still practicing here two decades later!

My practice: I have extensive expertise in gender-affirming hormone therapy, as well as procedural skills relating to the reproductive system and contraception.  I firmly believe that patients seeking gynecologic care should be offered adequate pain control for all procedures!  It is an honor to support people wherever they are at in making the best choices for their own health and well-being. I am also passionate about fostering community partnerships to create meaningful change in the lives of Oregonians.  I became a founding member of the OHSU Transgender Health Program in 2011, and inaugural Medical Director of the program in 2019.  I teach providers throughout the state of Oregon and beyond in how to provide gender-affirming hormone therapy.

How I thrive: When I need to recharge, it is with a guitar in hand, skiing a mountain, reading a good book or just spending quality time with my family and friends.

Languages: I speak English and Spanish.

Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment

  1. Check your network. If you have health insurance,  call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
  2. Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.

If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.

  1. Went smoothly really felt comfortable and cared for/about. Compassionate clinician.

  2. Dr. Milano and her team have been incredibly helpful in my transition journey, and my experience of virtual visits has been incredibly positive. Dr. Milano is responsive, respectful, and has been great at answering all my questions related to hormone therapy and other transition-related medical experiences. When I have labs done, Dr. Milano's team is quick to assess and respond to them in MyChart, and I feel comfortable reaching out whenever I have questions. Having a transgender-specific clinic through OHSU, and especially one that can be accessed virtually, has made me feel much more safe and comfortable with receiving medical care. Knowing that there is a space with professionals specializing in gender diverse individuals and the specific care we need is part of why I chose OHSU as my provider base in the first place. I would highly recommend Dr. Milano and the virtual hormone therapy clinic/OHSU transgender health program in general to anyone undergoing medical transition.
