About me

Thank you for visiting my homepage. I sincerely love being an Ob/Gyn. I cannot imagine practicing any other field of medicine. Being an Ob/Gyn allows me to partner with my patients every day. It is a privilege to teach a woman about her menstrual cycle, the importance of regular gyn care and pap smears, and empowering her with birth control when the time is right. It is an honor to share the adventure of pregnancy with my patients and their partners. Together, my patients and I continue to experience the pleasures and frustrations of menopause. Additionally, I offer my patients gynecologic surgery services from simple to complex as the need arises.

Since 2016 I have served as Director of Gynecology for the OHSU Transgender Health Program. It has been my absolute pleasure and honor to provide affirming care for transgender and gender nonconforming patients in a safe and positive environment.

I was born and raised in San Jose, CA. My parents were both teachers and dedicated their lives to multicultural education. My mother was originally from Grants Pass, OR and taught me to love the great outdoors. My father is Mexican-American, and our home was a bustling hub of international students that were part of my family’s exchange programs to Mexico and Japan. I attended Yale University and received a degree in psychobiology and had a special interest in sculpture. After living briefly in Spain, I attended MCP-Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia where I met my wonderful husband who is a perinatologist and geneticist. I did my Ob/Gyn residency at Kaiser Oakland and then stayed on as staff for 5 years before deciding to move north to the beautiful pacific northwest. We have 2 young children who are a joy and keep us busy! My brother is a professional photographer in the Bay Area, and my family continues to live in San Jose.

In my spare time, I enjoy flowers, travel, art, and spending time with friends and family.

Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment

  1. Check your network. If you have health insurance,  call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
  2. Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.

If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.

Visit our billing and insurance page for more information.

  15. This clinic and Dr. Shaffer are excellent. Best care I've ever had.

  16. Dr Shaffer was really wonderful. She was super kind and warm and gentle. I appreciated how she told me everything she was going to do before she did it and her bedside manner really put me at ease.

  17. Dr. Shaffer and her staff provided me with an excellent care experience, including pre-op, surgery, my hospital stay, and post op. She is incredibly friendly, understanding and knowledgeable. 27. Dr. Shaffer is one of the top 3 doctors I've ever seen in my lifetime, and I am a senior citizen so I have seen many doctors. I don't know how to express how amazing a doctor she is. I have seen her a few times and each time, she is always the best doctor she can be. She makes me feel cared for, she listens, she never seems rushed and her bedside manner is the best I've ever had. Do your hospital a favor and have Dr. Shaffer TEACH other doctors how to treat patients. She lifted my spirits, with her compassion, kindness, genuine warmth and sincere caring manner. She made me feel light-hearted and happy to be alive. We (family) recently were ready to leave OHSU and transfer to Providence mainly because of OHSU's abysmal access to care, as well as the absence of doctors, who have been replaced with PA's and Nurse Practitioners. I just want it known that Dr. Shaffer is the ONLY reason we stayed with OHSU. We couldn't bring ourselves to leave such a stellar doctor and person. I highly recommend Dr. Shaffer, but OHSU not so much.
