About me
I am a surgeon who treats adult patients in need of trauma, critical care or emergency general surgery.
I believe in giving expert surgical care with compassion, respect and clear communication. For patients who are badly injured or very sick, I guide them and their families through difficult situations with teamwork and decisions based on the best medical evidence. For patients having planned (elective) surgery or outpatient care, I focus on teaching and working together to make sure treatment plans match their goals and values.
I am the Trauma Medical Director and Division Head of Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery at OHSU, and I also serve as an Associate Professor of Surgery. I am board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. My work focuses on improving care for injured patients through teaching, research, and programs that raise the quality of care.
Before coming to OHSU, I led the Level 1 Trauma Center at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple in Texas. I also held leadership roles with the Texas Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) Collaborative and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma.
Outside of work, I enjoy family adventures, nature, and travel.

Before scheduling an appointment
- Check your network. If you have health insurance, call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
- Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.
If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.
