About me

Dr. Purnell’s clinical interests include endocrinology, metabolism, obesity, diabetes and hyperlipidema. He received his medical degree from OHSU in 1986, and completed his residency training at the University of Vermont in Burlington. He completed his endocrinology fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Purnell is board certified in internal medicine and in endocrinology.

  1. Dr Purnell is personable and professional. He provided a great deal of information and multiple options for treatment. He was upfront about side effects , ramifications and costs.

  2. Dr. Purnell is a very caring doctor who listens closely. He is my favorite doctor!

  3. Dr Purnell speaks to me so I can understand what he's talking about. He offers suggestions, solutions and offers support by utilizing MyChart as well as if I have any questions I can call & talk to the nurse and she will find out whatever from the Dr and get back to me. I don't feel like I'm alone in my rare disease problems. He has a great bedside manner and I appreciate that bc some Dr's I've had don't which makes having a Dr patient relationship awful. I wish I could have him as my pcp, lol. He's personable & I don't dread my appts with him like I do with some other Dr's I've been too.

  14. Dr. Purnell literally saved my life by getting me into the bariatric program. He has always been supportive and encouraging. He is very attentive to details of my health, even ones I hadn't recognized. He is good about talking to me about next steps and effects of medications that I take.

  16. I'm not sure what you mean by "clinician." If you mean the Doctor, then I have high praise. He takes the time to really talk with the patient, and figure out the treatment plan together. He's extremely knowledgeable, and still respectful.

  22. My clinician was warm and approachable. He conducted our appointment at a leisurely pace, making me feel heard and un-rushed, and took time to explain the details of my situation in terms I could easily understand. He welcomed my questions, disclosed difficult information with care, and ensured I understood all of the options at my disposal. I entered the appointment feeling anxious and stressed, and left feeling confident and at-ease.

  23. Dr. Purnell is a great communicator and provides great information. He's an excellent listener and spends time with his patients. He's never rushed or behaves as though he's in a hurry. He's willing to refer you for procedures to get to the bottom of issues. He's been an excellent physician.

  29. Second time I have seen Dr. Purcell. There was nearly a 3 yr interval between the two visits. Dr Purnell recognized me and was able to pick up right from where he left off 3 yrs ago. Decisions making was jointly made and I appreciated his thoughts about the path for the next year
