About me
Elizabeth Gary is a certified nurse midwife. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, she felt drawn to women’s health from a young age when she began volunteering at local hospitals throughout New York City. Witnessing first-hand the disparities in care provided for people of color, low socioeconomic status and other marginalized groups served as a constant motivation for Elizabeth to be a part of the movement for equity and reproductive justice. She discovered midwifery in college and knew in an instant that this was her calling. The core philosophies of the profession directly aligned with her passion for birth and forming deep and lasting connections with patients and their families as they navigate the transformative journey of pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.
Elizabeth graduated from Columbia University School of Nursing with her master's in midwifery. She began her career at a large teaching hospital in New York. Providing care for low to moderate risk people of a multitude of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, she helped bridge the gap for those who often have significant barriers to obtaining midwifery care.
After starting a family of her own, Elizabeth began a new chapter of her career with the Indian Health Services on Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona. There, she had the privilege of gaining a new perspective on pregnancy, birth and parenthood while learning from her patients, neighbors and community members in the sacred heart of the nation. She worked on multiple community development projects with her team and cared for individuals of low to high risk in a collaborative midwife/OBGYN practice.
Continuing her migration west, Elizabeth has landed in Portland, where she and her husband are excited to plant roots with their two young sons. When she is not practicing midwifery, Elizabeth enjoys traveling, baking, kayaking and having family dance parties and rap battles.
