About me

Don Kain has been a registered dietitian since 1989 and has been a CDCES (Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist) since 1995. Don has a master’s degree in exercise physiology and has a strong interest in the role that physical activity plays in the management and prevention of diabetes.

Don joined the HSDHC in 2008, and his work has a clinical and community outreach focus.  Don’s clinical passion centers around exercise and type 1 diabetes, and his outreach interests target diabetes prevention.

In 2011 Don became a National Master Trainer of National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) Lifestyle Coaches via the Diabetes Training and Technical Assistance Center (DTTAC) at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.  In addition to training National DPP Lifestyle Coaches, Don is a National DPP Lifestyle Coach for the OHSU offering of the National DPP.

Don grew up in Arizona, but has lived in Southern California and Oregon for the bulk of his adult life. In spite of all of the exposure to the sunshine in Arizona and California, Don really enjoys living in beautiful, green, clean Portland with his wife. Some of his personal interests include: news and current events, physical activity (swimming, weight lifting and cycling), as well as Pac 12 athletics, especially University of Arizona football and basketball.

Insurance

Before scheduling an appointment

  1. Check your network. If you have health insurance,  call your company to find out if the OHSU Health location or provider you plan to visit is part of your network.
  2. Ask what you will pay. Your insurance company can tell you what your costs are likely to be.

If you schedule an appointment and your health insurance does not include OHSU Health, you may have to pay more than if you go to a provider in your insurance network.

Visit our billing and insurance page for more information.
