Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship

2022-23 Fellows at the Knight Cardiovascular Institute.

Program overview

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship (Cardiology Fellowship) at the OHSU Knight Cardiovascular Institute aims to train outstanding clinicians in the field of cardiovascular medicine, to nurture interest in scientific investigation, and to help trainees reach their ultimate career goals in cardiology practice. Our faculty and staff are clinician-educators and scientists that are dedicated to the task of training tomorrow's cardiologists.

The educational program is based on curriculum, mentorship and experiences in a variety of settings including:

  • Inpatient cardiovascular services
  • Outpatient cardiovascular practice
  • Clinical laboratory and procedure-based services
  • Conferences
  • Research laboratory

Although the cardiovascular fellowship is a three-year accredited program, a four-year curriculum that includes expanded research activities is encouraged as part of our goal of training clinician-scientists for successful careers in academic medicine.

Clinical training

The clinical activities are performed at OHSU Hospital and the VA Medical Center which are located on the same campus. The curriculum includes core rotations and electives. For each rotation, the learning objectives and expectations based on ACGME competencies are provided.

Research experience

There are many basic science, translational and clinical research opportunities at the OHSU Knight Cardiovascular Institute related to cardiology. Our faculty includes superb mentors who are recognized internationally for their research and teaching accomplishments.

Subspecialty fellowships

Only applicants who have completed Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship will be considered for a subspecialty fellowship.

This fellowship provides two years of advanced training in heart rhythm disorders and is accredited by ACGME. The basic components of this fellowship include advanced training in diagnostic and therapeutic electrophysiology studies; management and consultation of inpatients with disorders of cardiac rhythm; placement and management of electrophysiology devices; and outpatient management of patients with heart rhythm disorders. Advanced training is possible in lead extraction, epicardial access, and mapping, and left atrial appendage closure.

We have filled our positions for AY 2024-25.

OHSU has had an active program for Adult Congenital Heart Disease (AHCD) focused care since 1985 and is a regional referral center for ACHD care. OHSU is an internationally recognized center of excellence of ACHD care including research, education and clinical innovation. The two year fellowship program prepares trainees to become skilled clinicians and scholars in the care of adults with congenital heart defects. Graduates of the program will achieve COCATS level III in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) and meet all of the requirements outlined in by the ACGME and in the Training Statement on ACHD.

We have filled our positions for AY 2023-24. We will recruit via ERAS in 2024 for an AY 2025-2026 start.

This fellowship provides a year of advanced training in heart failure and heart transplant and is accredited by ACGME. The basic components of this fellowship include advanced training of all stages and forms of heart failure, pre- and post-operative care of heart transplant and ventricular assist device patients, and key diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.

We have filled our positions for AY 2024-2025.

This fellowship provides one year of advanced training in interventional cardiology and is accredited by ACGME. The basic components of this fellowship include state-of-the-art training in percutaneous coronary intervention procedures, complex coronary artery diagnostic procedures, and the evaluation and management of patients with chronic or acute coronary artery disease. The fellowship includes exposure to advanced percutaneous procedures for structural heart disease, including complex valvular heart disease (TAVR, Mitra Clip, Melody, perivalvular leak closure), and to percutaneous ventricular assist devices.

The fellowship positions for AY 2023-24 and AY 2024-25 have been filled.

Advanced fellowship in Structural heart disease is directed to the goal of educating and producing subspecialists who will become proficient and competent in the care of patients suffering from complex valvular heart diseases, develop a deep understanding of the pathophysiology and literature that inform our treatment, and participate in clinical and/or basic research to help further the communal knowledge of complex valvular heart diseases.

We have filled our positions for AY 2024-2025.

The post-graduate fellowship in Cardiac Amyloidosis is directed to the goal of educating and producing subspecialists who will become proficient and competent in the care of patients suffering from amyloid cardiomyopathy, develop a deep understanding of the pathophysiology and literature that inform our treatment, and participate in clinical and/or basic research to help further the communal knowledge of cardiac amyloidosis. In addition, these core competencies, individuals will also learn about and become expert in, strain echocardiography, 3-D echocardiography, contrast echocardiography, myocardial perfusion studies, technetium pyrophosphate imaging, cardiac MRI, and PET-MRI.

Individuals are expected to develop a scientific question and, under the guidance of teaching staff and mentors, design a study aimed at answering that question. Formal departmental presentation of their work will be mandatory and it is expected that this will result in a presentation at a national meeting and/or publication within a peer-reviewed journal.

There are no openings for AY 2024-2025.

This fellowship provides one year of unaccredited advanced training in cardiovascular imaging. Our curriculum focuses on clinical skills in echocardiography, cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, and nuclear imaging. Individuals will receive a handheld echo device as part of the program. Fellows will have the opportunity to play an integral role in structural echo procedures such as TAVR, MitraClip, ASD closured, valve in valve, paravalvular leak closures and alcohol septal ablations. Our institution is proud to have access to the latest technologies and provide opportunities to learn on cutting-edge imaging equipment.

We have filled our positions for AY 2024-2025.
