Being a physician has always been the childhood dream of Dr. Therese Frances C. Ferandos, beginning when she was at the tender age of three. With unwavering focus on her goal, she was able to earn her medical degree at Cebu Doctors' University in the Philippines and graduated with honors. She also received the Academic Excellence Award and 2nd Most Outstanding Award during her Post-Graduate Internship at Perpetual Succour Hospital in Cebu, Philippines. She then proceeded to specialize in Internal Medicine at Cebu Doctors' University Hospital, where she became a finalist in the Philippine College of Physician Research competition both in the Annual Convention and in the Mid-year convention. Her research paper also garnered a finalist status in the Philippine Lipid and Atherosclerosis Society Oral Presentation. Driven by a quest for knowledge and the desire to serve, she did her Adult Cardiology Fellowship in the number 1 Cardiology training institution in the Philippines, the Philippine Heart Center. This institution, renowned to be the only subspecialty hospital in cardiology in the entire country and the first in Asia, provided her with extensive training and exposure to complex cardiac cases. This experience emboldened her to pursue Advanced Cardiology Fellowship training in Adult Congenital Heart Disease abroad. She aspires to bridge the gap in knowledge in this budding subspecialty and hopefully blaze a trail in the competitive field of Adult Cardiology by taking on the unprecedented feat to spearhead the advancement of the less ventured field of ACHD across the globe. After all, perseverance is a mark of true greatness. As the horizon is limitless, so are her dreams.

Claire grew up in Phoenix, AZ and taught English in South Korea on a Fulbright scholarship before attending Mayo for med school. Since then, she has been in Portland, Oregon for IM residency and was lucky to stick around for a chief year.

In residency, she realized she loves medical education and is happiest while in cardiology clinic, especially ACHD and Cardi-OB clinic! Outside of work, Claire loves biking, hiking in the Gorge, and spending time with her fiancé Camden and their two cats, Frog & Toad.

Ivan Arenas, M.D., Ph.D.

Medical School: Universidad Industrial de Santander, Bucaramanga, Colombia

Residency Program: Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida

Dr. Ivan A. Arenas is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiology, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. He earned his medical degree at the Universidad Industrial de Santander and completed his internal medicine residency in Framingham, Massachusetts. He then completed a cardiology fellowship at the Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida. Dr. Arenas also holds a doctoral degree in cardiovascular physiology from the University of Alberta and was a postdoctoral Fellow of the Canadian Institutes of Health and Research, where he conducted studies of genetics and blood pressure regulation at the University of Montreal. 

Before moving to Salem, OR, he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University - Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Florida. He has served as editorial board member of scientific journals and is author/co-author of several publications in the field of cardiovascular field.  Dr Arenas was the Medical Director of cardiology and Medical Director of the echocardiography lab at Salem Health Hospital before joining OHSU as an Advanced Heart Failure Fellow.

Philip J. Blatt, M.D.
3rd Year Fellow

Medical School: Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR

Residency Program: Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR

Dr. Blatt is a native Oregonian and completed both medical school and residency at OHSU. He is honored to have the ability to continue serve his local community during cardiology fellowship. During his residency he conducted research to understand the economic impact of novel medications for cardiac amyloidosis. He hopes to continue this work during fellowship.

Outside of work, Dr. Blatt is a dedicated road-cyclist and spends his days off biking as many miles as possible. When not on his bike, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their dog and trying to find the best cup of coffee in Portland.

William B. Earle, M.D.
3rd Year Fellow

Medical School: University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine

Residency Program: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Dr. Earle grew up in Vermont hiking and skiing. He attended Williams College majoring in history, before returning to Vermont to attend the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. After medical school, he completed his internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, Massachusetts.

During residency he participated in the clinician educator track, and pursued research interests in hypertension and peripheral vascular disease. Following completion of residency he spent a year dividing his time as a research fellow in vascular medicine at the Smith Center for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research at BIDMC and working clinically as a hospitalist at BIDMC and faculty member at Harvard Medical School.

He and his wife recently welcomed a daughter to their family. They are thrilled to be moving back to Oregon, where his wife grew up to be close to family. They also have a golden retriever who loves to swim and retrieve tennis balls.  When not in the hospital he enjoys, running, hiking, and skiing.

I was born in Punjab, India and mainly grew up in the California Bay Area. I moved to New York to attend medical school at Stony Brook University before returning to the West Coast for residency training at OHSU. I became interested in cardiology because of the wonderful teaching and mentorship at OHSU, and I am thrilled to be continuing my training here for fellowship.

In my free time I love to cook and try new recipes, swim, hike, and spend time with friends and family.

Jiyoung Seo, M.D.

Dr. Seo grew up in Seoul, South Korea, where she completed her medical education. Driven by a passion for advancing her medical training, she relocated to New York with her husband, Isaac. It was during her time in New York that Dr. Seo developed a keen interest in the intricacies of cardiology, particularly electrophysiology.

She is also eager to explore the natural beauty of Oregon while furthering her training in the field.

I am originally from Bellevue, WA, but spent most of my childhood summers with family in rural Eastern Washington. I grew to love that part of the state for all the unique communities and outdoor activities it had to offer. Hoping to stay close to family, I obtained my undergraduate degree at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. I went on to study medicine through the University of Washington – Spokane campus, where I met my now wife.

We went on to complete our residency training in Denver, Colorado. Although we enjoyed our time in Denver, we both missed our home in the Pacific Northwest and being close to family. In our free time, we love hiking with our rescue dog Rio, exploring new breweries, and going on long bike rides.

Born and raised amidst the vibrant landscapes of Aswan, Egypt, my unwavering commitment to medicine, particularly in the realms of cardiovascular diseases, has been a driving force in my journey. After completing my cardiovascular medicine training in Egypt, I embarked on a transformative path by pursuing my internal medicine residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. These varied experiences have not only intensified my passion for enhancing cardiac care but also broadened my perspective in medicine across a diverse spectrum of patient populations.

Beyond the confines of medicine, I immerse myself in the enriching pursuits of travel, photography, and strumming the guitar. Finding joy between art, the human heart, and the world at large. I eagerly anticipate the forthcoming chapter of my journey within the advanced heart failure and heart transplant fellowship program at OHSU in Portland, Oregon.

I was born and raised in the Salt Lake City area where I completed my undergraduate, M.B.A., and medical degrees at the University of Utah. My family and I then moved to Oregon where I completed my internal medicine residency at OHSU. We enjoy hiking and frequenting the numerous farms throughout the Portland metro and Columbia River Gorge areas.

I grew up in the greater Sacramento area in California, moved to NYC for medical school, and then OHSU for Internal Medicine residency and stayed for my Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship. Outside of medicine, I enjoy eating, exploring new restaurants and cuisines, and cooking. Hiking in the spring/summer and snowboarding in the winter.

Abby Sapru, M.D.
2nd Year Fellow

Medical School: Washington State University in Spokane, WA

Residency Program: OHSU

Dr. Sapru is a first generation Indian American who grew up in the Seattle area, where she also completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Washington. Her love for the beautiful Pacific Northwest and family always kept her close. She went on to attend medical school at Washington State University, training across both Spokane and Vancouver, WA, and ultimately headed further south to Portland, OR, for her internal medicine residency at OHSU. 

Her interest in cardiology began during clinical clerkships in medical school and her passion only grew throughout residency. In addition to exploring the breadth of cardiology during fellowship, her interests include cardiovascular health equity and medical education.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Sapru enjoys hiking in the PNW,  traveling, cooking, lifting weights, binging a good TV show, listening to podcasts and music, and spending time with family and friends.

I am from the San Francisco Bay Area, where I eventually worked in clinical research for several years before deciding to pursue a career in medicine. I am now arriving in Portland for fellowship in Cardiology by way of New Orleans, LA, for medical school, and Denver, CO, for residency. Outside of work, I enjoy live music, wilderness backpacking, fishing, cycling, and growing a variety of chili peppers and tomatoes in my garden. I am very grateful for the opportunity to train in my desired field in Oregon, and I look forward to exploring the Pacific Northwest over the next few years.

I am excited to return to the Pacific Northwest for cardiology fellowship, closer to nature and family. Outside of medicine I enjoy photography, long-distance running, and basketball.

I'm from Brazil, where I went to medical school. I moved to Boston for a postdoc research position, then to Pittsburgh for internal medicine. After graduation, I did my MPH at Harvard Chan on Quantitative methods while I worked as a hospitalist at Brigham. I'm interested in preventive cardiology, multimodality imaging, EP, medical education, and machine learning. My research has been focused on CVD predictive models. Outside of medicine, I enjoy cooking, playing violin, and playing pickleball.

Nicolas Fandino-Rubio, M.D.

I grew up in Bogotá, Colombia, and moved to the United States in my early teens, settling just outside of Boston. It was there that I discovered my passion for medicine, which ultimately led me to pursue a career in the field with the goal of becoming a cardiologist. I attended medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson before returning to Massachusetts to complete my Internal Medicine residency at UMass.

I am excited to begin this next chapter in the Pacific Northwest alongside my partner, Nicole, and our cat, Oliver. Outside of medicine, I am an avid New England sports fan who enjoys attending games, exploring new restaurants, and starting the day with a great cup of coffee—something I take seriously as a proud Colombian.

Pristine is a first-generation Chinese American who grew up in Somerville, MA. She completed her undergraduate studies at Syracuse University before moving to the Southwest to attend medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. There, she met her partner and they both matched to OHSU for residency. Pristine stayed an additional year, serving as chief resident. 

She is excited to continue her training at OHSU for cardiology fellowship. Her interests include general cardiology, preventive cardiology, and cardiovascular health equity. Outside of medicine, Pristine enjoys running, hiking, reading, and exploring all that Portland has to offer with her partner.

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona and attended undergrad at University of Arizona in Tucson, Az. I spent 2 years after undergraduate working in biotechnology and cardiac devices, where I developed my interest in cardiac electrophysiology. I then completed medical school at University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix where I also earned my Master in Public Health degree. I went on to train in Internal Medicine at UC Davis in Sacramento, Ca where I served as Chief Resident after graduation. I am overjoyed to be joining the OHSU family! 

My professional interest are cardiac electrophysiology, medical education, and patient centered care. Outside of the hospital I enjoy hiking, cooking, cycling, and snowboarding.

Kevin Paternostro, M.D.

I grew up in the suburbs outside of Portland, Oregon and am excited to return home for fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University. I attended medical school at OHSU before completing internal medicine residency at the University of California, San Diego, where I served as Chief Medical Resident focusing on novel methods for teaching EKG interpretation. I loved the sun of San Diego, but the Douglas Firs are still my home. 

My clinical interests include advanced heart failure and transplantation, and the cardiovascular complications of substance use disorder. Outside of the hospital, I enjoy spending time with my wife Nissa and our son Silas, exploring the outdoors, and catching as many baseball games as I can.

Dr. Xiao grew up in Austin, TX and completed medical school and residency in Houston, TX. She is deeply committed to medical education and to providing thoughtful, compassionate care for patients from all backgrounds. 

Outside of her clinical work, Dr. Xiao has enjoyed traveling to 45+ countries, birdwatching with her husband, and exploring food through new restaurants and recipes.

Adarsh Katamreddy, M.D.

Dr. Adarsh Katamreddy completed his residency and subsequently served as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Jacobi Medical Center in New York, where he earned recognition for excellence in research and teaching, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Katamreddy’s research interests focus on cardiac arrhythmias, advanced cardiovascular imaging, and outcomes research. His work has been published extensively in prominent high impact journals. He is actively involved in national and international clinical studies, and regularly contributes to professional societies, including serving as an abstract reviewer for the Heart Rhythm Society. Dr. Katamreddy is dedicated to improving patient care through innovative electrophysiology research, education, and clinical excellence. In his free time, he enjoys exploring the natural beauty and outdoor activities of the Pacific Northwest.

I grew up and went to college in Columbus, Ohio. I became interested in medicine during my undergraduate degree, and have since been especially interested in cardiovascular medicine.

N. Shyama Appareddy, M.D.

Medical School: Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University

Residency Program: University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Dr. Appareddy was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She developed an early interest in the social determinants of health and health equity, a passion that has continued to shape her education and training.

She attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she majored in Anthropology and Human Biology. After graduating, she worked as a Regional Coordinator for a nonprofit organization based in Birmingham, Alabama. She then earned her medical degree from Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, where she was awarded the Paul F. Dishner and Robert T. Bowers scholarships and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Dr. Appareddy completed her internal medicine residency at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine at Valley Baptist Medical Center. During her internship year, she was voted Outstanding Intern of the Year by the internal medicine clerkship students. She subsequently completed her cardiology fellowship at UCHealth Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, Colorado.

Outside of medicine, she enjoys traveling, skiing, and hiking with her dogs, Sage and Jasmine. She is excited to join the OHSU community and continue her training in interventional cardiology.

Jasmine Garg, M.D.

Medical School: New York Medical College

Residency Program: Westchester Medical Center

I grew up in Portland, Oregon and earned my medical degree at New York Medical College. I completed my residency at Westchester Medical Center. I am interested in multiple areas within cardiology, including cardiac amyloidosis as well as cardiology research. Outside of medicine, I am passionate about running, swimming, hiking and traveling.

Meghan Stevenson, D.O.

Medical School: Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine

Residency Program: St. Bernards Medical Center

I am originally from North Texas and completed my medical training in Arkansas, where I developed my passion for cardiology. My wife and I have three dogs and enjoy hiking and exploring new places together. I am excited for the opportunity to move to the Pacific Northwest to explore such a beautiful area while also strengthening my knowledge in cardiology through advanced cardiac imaging.

John-Henry Dean, M.D.

Medical School: University of Virginia School of Medicine

Residency Program: San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium

John-Henry Dean, M.D., is an active-duty US Air Force officer and the inaugural Sports Cardiology and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy fellow at OHSU. He completed his internal medicine residency and cardiovascular disease fellowship training at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium. His clinical interests focus on the intersection of sports cardiology, advanced cardiovascular imaging, and preventive cardiology, particularly as it relates to tactical athletes. He is actively engaged with the American College of Cardiology and is a member of the Sports and Exercise Cardiology Council. After completing the fellowship, he will return to the Air Force where he hopes to advance the cardiovascular care of military personnel.
