Adult Psychiatry Residency Program Overview

The OHSU Psychiatry Residency Training program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and meets the requirements of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. We have eight positions per class.

Our program also benefits from the fact that we have the 5 ACGME-accredited psychiatry fellowships here at OHSU:

Our mission in the OHSU General Adult Psychiatry Training Program is to engage physicians in becoming outstanding academic and community psychiatrists, advocates for mental health and leaders in medicine. Our residents train within a department rich in history that promotes a community of inquiry and lifelong learning bounded by interprofessional collaboration, mentorship, critical thinking and scientific evidence. Our training shall always be in the service of providing state-of-the-art care to our patients who come from all backgrounds. We are committed to the highest standards of ethics and professionalism.

1) To train academic and community psychiatrists who, through comprehensive clinical training, leave our program prepared to enter a variety of career fields; with ownership of their responsibilities to their patients and their profession; and with skills to lead at the institutional, community, and national level.
2) To provide residents with the skills to advocate for the mental health of their patients at all levels: the individual patient, the community, and the population
3) To create a professional community that promotes lifelong learning, interprofessional collaboration, mentorship, that is based on critical thinking and review of the scientific evidence
4) To provide state-of-the-art care using the highest standards of ethics and professionalism that emphasizes patient safety, personal accountability, and the willingness to continuously and objectively evaluate and improve our practices
5) To recruit, retain, and engage a diverse community of mental health clinicians who care for the diverse populations that we serve and to foster a supportive environment that values diverse backgrounds and perspectives

The Residency Program of the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University adheres to the basic belief that human beings exist in biological, social and cultural matrices which directly affect their sense of psychological well-being. With this firmly in mind, the training program emphasizes clinical proficiency in assessing and intervening within these matrices for the benefit of patients. Insights thus gained have led graduates to become leaders in their community as psychiatric clinicians and academicians.

  1. We Are Patient Advocates:
    • We are responsive to the needs of patients and let that responsiveness supersede self-interest. Our patients’ welfare, health and safety are our first considerations. We collaborate within the care system so we can be effective advocates for patients and families.
  2. We Commit To Our Community:
    • We are involved in OHSU and are proud representatives of the institution. We find ways of connecting meaningfully to the people with whom we live and work. We consider the importance of a commitment that encompasses more than ourselves.
  3. We Honor Diversity:
    • We demonstrate a sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences. We do not permit age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between our duties and our patients.
  4. We Work With Purpose:
    • We take pride in our profession, practice ethically and with purpose. We own our work and show that we are willing to go the extra mile.
  5. We Are Lifelong Teachers And Learners:
    • No matter our stage of training, we are always ready and willing to learn. We prepare for learning activities and engage actively. Most importantly, we maintain an approach to clinical experiences that reflects an understanding that some of our most important lessons come from engagement with our patients.
  6. We Play Well With Others:
    • We make every effort to develop good relationships with all colleagues. We demonstrate a respect for others and belief in the intrinsic value of others. We offer our assistance and support to colleagues in need.
  7. We Advance Our Field:
    • Using the best evidence, practices, research, and ingenuity, we keep pushing psychiatry, and our program at OHSU, forward.
  8. We Are Honest:
    • We strive never to sacrifice character and integrity. We respect the secrets confided in us and remain mindful of the boundaries involved in patient care. We celebrate successes, but admit to and take responsibility for failures and work hard to make things right.
  9. We Are Mindful:
    • We engage in self-reflection on one’s ability to care for patients under special circumstances including fatigue, stress, sleep deprivation and complicated clinical situations. We actively seek supervision, consultation and assistance when our capacity is taxed. We take time to care for ourselves and seek a healthy integration of work and home life as a life outside the training environment enhances life within it.
  10. We Are Present In All Aspects Of Work And Life:
    • We show gratitude for our patients, our teachers and to all who have contributed to our profession with each opportunity that is given us.
