Department of Neurological Surgery Distinguished Alumni Award

The OHSU Department of Neurological Surgery appreciates that there are many distinguished former departmental residents who have made significant achievements in, and contributions to, academic and clinical neurosurgical practice. In recognition of their contribution to the field the department has created an annual Distinguished Alumni Award. The award will be presented usually each year at the Paxton Alumni Reunion and the honored awardee will be called upon to give a short presentation on a subject of their choosing.

The 2010 recipient is Hirohisa Ono, M.D., board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1990. Dr. Ono, now retired, had practiced neurological surgery in Portland, Ore. with Kaiser, Sunnyside Hospital. Originally from Japan Dr. Ono moved to Oregon in 1982 (he had previously spent a year as an instructor in neurosurgery at OHSU in 1972). Dr. Ono had studied medicine at the University of Nagasaki, Medical School, Japan and was a faculty member of University of Nagasaki, Medical School, Department of Neurosurgery for 10 years before accepting an appointment of associate professor in the then division of neurosurgery at OHSU, in 1982. In 1984 he joined Kaiser, Sunnyside Hospital, where he was chief of neurosurgery from 1992.
Dr. Ono is active in retirement. An avid competitive golfer, who picked up the game in his mid-50’s, he remains active in neuroscience research with a particular interest in embryonic stem cell research.
