Heather Freiheit, M.M., B.S.N., RN, Paramedic (Program Director)
- Clinical Assistant Professor, School of Nursing
Biography
I am a faculty member and Interim Program Director for OHSU's School of Nursing in the online RN to BS undergraduate degree program. I am a retired paramedic and registered nurse with more than 30 years of experience across clinical practice, leadership, emergency management, and education. My clinical background includes pre-hospital care and flight nursing, followed by inpatient roles in the ICU, ED, and as a House Supervisor at a small hospital. I later transferred to a regional emergency department where I served as charge nurse, Trauma Coordinator, and ultimately manager of a Level II regional trauma center.
During this time, I earned a Master’s degree in Management and spent nine years in formal leadership roles. I then transitioned to higher education and emergency preparedness, serving as the Director of Emergency Preparedness at Southern Oregon University, while also teaching for OHSU on the Ashland campus. I was later recruited to serve as Administrator for an ambulatory surgery center, where I also completed a post-master’s certificate in nursing education.
In 2015, I returned full-time to teaching on the Ashland campus and transitioned to the OHSU RNBS online program in 2017. In 2024, I assumed the role of Interim Program Director, where my focus has been on working closely with my team to continuously strengthen the RNBS program, support faculty, and ensure our students receive a high-quality, relevant, and student-centered educational experience. Creating the best RNBS program possible is a shared effort, and I value collaboration, innovation, and practical application in all aspects of our work.
In addition to my academic role, I currently work with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and deploy across the U.S. and U.S. territories following disasters to help coordinate care provided by federal disaster medical teams as an Operations Section Chief on out Federal Incident Management Team.
I have always enjoyed teaching and find it deeply rewarding to watch students progress along their learning continuum. It brings me great satisfaction to help students build a strong nursing foundation and, ideally, inspire them to become lifelong learners.
