About me

Dr. Catherine Hough is a professor and the chair of the Department of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. Her clinical and scientific expertise focuses on improving outcomes of patients with critical illness and injury, with a focus on psychological impairment and wellness. She is active in epidemiologic research, clinical trials and implementation science, both during and after critical care.

Dr. Hough has served as principal investigator (PI) for the NIH NHLBI Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Clinical Trials Network and the current NIH NHLBI Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury (PETAL) Network, with over 10 years of experience with these networks. She has had NIH funding since 2004 to conduct prospective observational and interventional studies in the ICU and post-ICU setting. Additionally, she has extensive experience leading observational studies, including a recent prospective longitudinal study of over 1,300 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 that boasts a 90% follow-up rate after hospital discharge.

With relevant experience and a strong record of collaboration, Dr. Hough brings deep knowledge of trials of critical illness survivors and behavioral interventions to the team. In her role of PI for the OHSU CTSA KL2 program, she has been working closely with Dr. Cynthia Morris for several years. This year, she and Dr. Morris will serve as MPI for a data coordinating center in a study with Dr. Cox that will determine the efficacy of coping skills training on psychological outcomes of survivors of critical illness. This record of collaboration and complementary strengths and experience are ideal for the proposed MPI plan.
