Robert M. Orfaly, M.D., M.B.A., FAAOS
- Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, School of Medicine
Biography
I'm a shoulder and upper extremity surgeon at OHSU, where I've been on faculty since 1999. My career has been driven by two passions: delivering high-quality, high-value care to my patients, and advancing orthopaedic education at every level.
I completed my medical degree at McGill University in Montreal, followed by a surgical internship at the University of Toronto, an orthopaedic residency and upper extremity fellowship at the University of British Columbia, and a shoulder fellowship at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. In addition to my surgical training, I hold an M.B.A. in Healthcare Administration — a credential I pursued to deepen my understanding of how to improve care quality and value across healthcare systems. I currently serve as Quality Medical Director and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in OHSU's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.
I've been deeply involved in professional advocacy throughout my career. I'm a past president of both the Oregon Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Oregon Medical Association, and I'm proud to be the recipient of the John Tongue Advocacy Champion Award. At the national level, I've served in multiple leadership roles with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), including Chair of the Board of Councilors, member of the Board of Directors, and most recently as Editor-in-Chief of AAOS Now from 2021–2025. I currently serve as Chair of the AAOS Education Council, where my focus is on maintaining the excellence of current educational offerings while driving strategic and technological innovation for orthopaedic surgeons nationwide.
Teaching and mentorship have always been central to who I am as a physician — from working with medical students and residents here at OHSU to continuing education for practicing surgeons and allied health professionals. I find it deeply rewarding to give back to the profession that has given me so much.
