  • Assistant Professor of OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, School of Medicine

Biography

Dr. Tredway received her doctorate in Physical Cultural Studies from the Department of Kinesiology in the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, under the guidance of Patricia Hill Collins (from the Department of Sociology), the world-renowned scholar of intersectionality. Her research focuses on improving access to breast cancer care and treatment for women, especially those who are socially marginalized due to race, sexual orientation, or gender expression. She has obtained NIH, CDC, and Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund funding to design and implement interventions to research health disparities for historically marginalized women across the breast cancer continuum, from screenings to treatment. She has won multiple awards for her research, including the AACR Minorities in Cancer Research (MICR) Scholar Award from the American Association for Cancer Research (twice), the Scholar-in-Training Award from the American Association for Cancer Research, the William and Madeline Welder Smith Research Travel Award from the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas, the International Sociology of Sport Association’s Graduate Paper Award, and the prestigious Sally J. Phillips Dissertation Fellowship award and the Ann G. Wylie Dissertation Fellowship at the University of Maryland, among other awards.

Dr. Tredway currently serves as an Assistant Professor of intersectionality, health disparities, and breast cancer. In July, she will begin a 3-year term as a member of the OHSU Gender Equity in Academic Health and Medicine committee. Prior to starting this position in August 2024, she was a Research Associate (faculty) at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, a member of the campus-wide President’s Diversity Leadership Council, and an affiliated faculty member with the Center for Qualitative Studies in Health and Medicine. Dr. Tredway is also a certified health educator and patient navigator. She has published in JAMA Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology – Oncology Practice, Psycho-Oncology, and Ethnic and Racial Studies, among other journals, in addition to her book on Social Activism in Women’s Tennis published by Routledge.
