Renal Pathology

Renal microscope images

OHSU has offered comprehensive renal pathology services locally and to communities on Oregon and SW Washington since the 1970s. We offer all of the studies recommended for the routine evaluation of adult and pediatric, native and allograft kidney biopsies, and a full complement of renal pathology services and testing, unique among labs in Oregon.

Our board-certified pathologists have had formal training in nephrology and immunopathology. We provide timely, preliminary information personally, as well as progress reports on current cases, and one of us is always available for consultation.

Studies offered

Native kidney biopsies

The following studies are recommended for the routine evaluation of an adequate renal biopsy specimen:

  • Light microscopy (LM)
  • Immunoflourescence Microscopy (IF)
  • Electron Microscopy (EM)

Allograft kidney biopsies

The following studies are recommended for the routine evaluation of an adequate allograft kidney biopsy specimen:

  • Light microscopy (LM)
  • Immunoflourescence Microscopy (IF)
  • Electron Microscopy (EM)

Note: Electron microscopy is not usually required for evaluation of renal insufficiency in the allograft biopsy, but it is recommended if the patient has hematuria and/or proteinuria, or other evidence of glomerular disease.

For details about what constitutes an adequate biopsy, dividing the specimen and the proper fixatives, see our consultation information and our FAQ.

Additional studies

We offer many immunohistochemical and in-situ hybridization studies needed to identify infectious, infiltrative and hereditary diseases of the kidney.

Outside slides and blocks

We offer consultation in the evaluation of blocks or slides from renal biopsies, nephrectomies and autopsy cases.
