Dr. Choo speaks at Ohio State University

Esther Choo, M.D., M.P.H., traveled to Ohio State University to present, "Gender Bias in the House of Medicine and Why Emergency Medicine is Likely to Crush it," as their Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds speaker.

The presentation explained that despite the fact that there have been almost equal numbers of women and men in medical school since the 1990's, there are persistent disparities in salary and advancement of women in medicine.

Dr. Choo reviewed data demonstrating that these disparities are not improving and may actually be worsening, raised the concerning issue of the "leaky pipeline," and then reviewed the biases that may be underlying the lack of progress for women physicians. She then discussed some steps that might be taken by departments and individuals to prevent bias from creeping in, and concluded with an argument that emergency medicine will be the field to lead the house of medicine in establishing equity, diversity, and inclusion.
