Background

OHSU is part of a national research study called PACT: Prehospital Airway Control Trial. The aim is to compare different ways to help people with traumatic injuries breathe. Between 8% and 15% of people with traumatic injuries die because they did not get adequate help breathing.

Exception from Informed Consent (EFIC)

EFIC Research Trials allow researchers to enroll a person in a trial prior to asking for their consent and is only allowed when:

It's an emergency
there's not a proven "best treatment"
the treatment can't wait for informed consent to happen (informed consent is the process where researchers ask your permission to be part of a study/trial)

It's important to know that in EFIC research you, your family, or your medical representative will be asked for your consent to continue participating in the study as soon as there is time to sit with you and talk about what is happening and why the research is being done.
