Biography

Dr. Hwang specializes in retinal diseases and vitreoretinal surgery. He received his M.D. from the University of California, San Diego, and completed a residency in ophthalmology at Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University. He completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Casey Eye Institute, OHSU. His interests include graduate medical education, clinical informatics, and ophthalmic imaging.

Dr. Hwang has served as the director of the vitreoretinal fellowship and the ophthalmology residency program at the Casey Eye Institute, and currently serves as the chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Review Committee for Ophthalmology.

As a board-certified clinical informatician, he has been involved in the specialty-specific implementation of and training for electronic health records. He is a co-principal investigator in an NIH-funded grant to explore the clinical application of optical coherence tomography angiography in diabetic retinopathy.
