Shelby Thompson
Biography
I am a DNP student in the family nurse practitioner program, currently located at the Portland campus, and set to graduate in June 2027! I started my program as a distance student through the La Grande campus, and moved to the Portland area for the clinical experience and to be closer to family.
My background is primarily in military medicine. I joined the Air National Guard as a medic in 2015 and am still there today. I have had the opportunity to deploy on numerous training missions across the world. I work in a small 3 person team taking care of over 200 personnel made up of pilots and support crew. Serving in the Air Force has given me experience working in high stress environments and a greater appreciation for being creative in resource limited environments.
My time in the military has motivated me to take on a bigger role in patient care. I am motivated to be someone that others trust and would feel comfortable bringing their family to. I enjoy getting to know others, teaching people about their health, and creating management plans that will work for their life!
I decided to join the tutor group, as I remember being in my first few terms of the DNP program and found tutoring extremely helpful! My goal is to pass on this same type of help to other future nurse practitioners! I love learning more about the pathophysiology of diseases and knowing “why” something happens. I hope that my passion for helping others and ability to break down complex materials can be helpful to you! I understand that everyone learns in different ways, and am committed to integrating useful tools that are aimed at different learning styles.
Outside of school, I love spending time with my 2.5 year old son! He loves mud, puddles, cars, and animals. I am so excited to take him exploring this year, as the weather permits, and watch him see new things for the first time!
