Kaul’s major clinical and research interest is coronary artery disease. He is a pioneer in cardiovascular imaging, having spearheaded many of the developments in contrast echocardiography and making major contributions to the field of nuclear cardiology. He studies coronary physiology and pathophysiology both in animal models and in humans. He has published over 250 papers in the most prestigious cardiovascular journals. He was funded continuously by the National Institutes of Health from 1986 until 2014 and received numerous grants from the American Heart Association.
For his body of work Kaul received the prestigious Outstanding Investigator Award of the American Federation for Clinical Research in 1995 which is given to 2 individuals a year under the age of 45 for seminal and original investigation in any field of medicine. He was also the recipient of the Established Investigator Award of the American Heart Association. Kaul has an excellent record as a teacher and mentor. In 2001, he was awarded the first Richard Popp gifted teacher award from the American Society of Echocardiography and in 2003 he was awarded the Women in Cardiology mentoring award from the American Heart Association. In 2012 Kaul received the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American College of Cardiology. Kaul is only one of 4 cardiologists in the Northwest voted by his peers as Top Doctors in America. Kaul is a member of the most prestigious by invitation alone medical societies in the US: American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the Association of University Cardiologists, and the American Clinical and Climatologic Association. He is also a member of the Association of Professors of Cardiology, The American College of Cardiology, and the American Heart Association. Kaul has served as a permanent member of two review committees of the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association Research Committee, and the National Board of Echocardiography. Kaul is on the editorial boards of the top cardiovascular journals in the US and abroad and was Associate Editor of the American Journal of Nuclear Cardiology. He was the co-chair of the American College of Cardiology Scientific Session in 2000 and Chair of the American Society of Echocardiography Annual Scientific Session in 2005.
