Biography

Dr. Sanjay Krishnaswami is a pediatric surgeon and a professor of surgery in the Division of Pediatric Surgery in the OHSU School of Medicine.

He has expertise in neonatal minimally invasive surgery, and has deep experience in repairing a condition in babies called congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). In CDH, a baby's diaphragm and lungs don't develop normally. Dr. Krishnaswami uses a special minimally invasive surgery called thoracoscopy to repair CDH. His current research focuses on the effectiveness of CDH surgeries, and on how to offer better surgeries for people in resource-poor countries.

Dr. Krishnaswami also serves as educational director and associate program director for the pediatric surgery fellowship at OHSU.

Dr. Krishnaswami is very interested in international health. He has collaborated with and served as a visiting professor for several medical institutions in Africa and India. He is co-editor of the Global Paediatric Surgery Network, which aims to increase resources for children's surgery in resource-poor regions of the world. The network has now merged with the Global Initiative for Children's Surgery to form the GICS Network.

Dr. Krishnaswami earned his M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa. He completed an internship in general surgery at Allegheny University of the Health Services, also in Philadelphia, and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of California at San Diego Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in surgical research at Drexel University in Philadelphia and a fellowship in pediatric surgery at Nationwide Children's Hospital/The Ohio State University School of Medicine, in Columbus, Ohio.
