My research is in clinical informatics. Problem: Doctors spend around 30% of their time documenting patient care. Yet almost all of this valuable information is unavailable or goes unused for quality improvement or clinical research. This information represents a huge and valuable untapped resource for the potential benefit of human health. Research: Develop methods of structuring documentation that allow secure information to be more easily used for research and quality improvement—without diminishing the patient-doctor relationship – while also dimishing the documentation workload of doctors.
