Biography
Dr. Husain is a Professor of Surgery within the Division of Foregut and Bariatric Metabolic Surgery. She is a bariatric and minimally invasive surgeon with experience in complex revisional surgery, endoscopic bariatrics, and robotic surgery. She is nationally recognized as an expert in metabolic/bariatric surgery and has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Her interests include development of mentorship and sponsorship in surgery, the future of surgical education, precision treatment in obesity, and improving outcomes in metabolic/bariatric surgery.
Dr. Husain earned her M.D. degree from George Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her General Surgery internship and residency at Madigan Army Medical Center and served as an Active-Duty General Surgeon in the US Army, to include 2 tours overseas in support of OIF. She subsequently completed her Endosurgery/Minimally-Invasive Surgery Fellowship at Emory University. Following fellowship, she started the inaugural Metabolic Surgery-Medical Weight Management Program for Kaiser Permanente in Colorado, and in 2015, was recruited to OHSU. She became the Division Head of Bariatric Surgery and Vice Chair of Regional Strategy from 2018-2022, while also serving as the Program Director of the OHSU MIS fellowship. From 2022-2025, she led the Bariatric division of University of Arizona COM-Phoenix, in developing the first Banner/UofAZ Comprehensive Obesity Management program and serving as the Vice Chair of Quality. She rejoined the OHSU Department of Surgery in 2025.
Dr. Husain is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, as well as holding a Focused-Practice Designation in Metabolic/Bariatric Surgery from the American Board of Surgery.
