Biography
I am an environmental epidemiologist with an interest in how (and when) exposures to natural and built environments are embodied, and to what magnitude this environmental embodiment drives chronic disease risk and survival. I am also interested in how the physical, biological, chemical, and social environment can positively and negatively impact care and treatment. I have been trained in biology (B.Sc.), ecosystems and biodiversity (M.Sc.), landscape architecture, environmental exposure assessment (Ph.D.), and epidemiology, and aim to use holistic, policy-relevant approaches to assess the impact of the environment on human health.
I've conducted epidemiological research on environmental exposures including greenspace, walkability, noise and air pollution, wildfire smoke and extreme heat, neighborhood socioeconomic status, and healthcare accessibility. My team and I are currently focused on understanding the impacts of co-occurring beneficial and harmful environmental exposures across the cancer continuum.
Aside from epidemiological research and 1-1 supervision and mentoring, I teach ESHH 515/615 Geographic Information Systems and Public Health (Fall), ESHH 511/611 Concepts of Environmental Health (Winter), and ESHH 512/612 Global & Planetary Health Concepts (Spring) at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. I'm an active member of the SPH Student Affairs Committee and the OHSU Climate Change Curriculum Task Force. I'm also currently learning new skills as the leader of the U.S. team in the GreenME project, which is a Horizon E.U. project focused on green care for mental health equity.
I work closely with members of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology to advocate for equitable and health-promoting environments.
