Andrea C. Smeraglio, M.D. (she/her/hers)
Biography
I'm a hospitalist and physician educator with a passion for training the next generation of doctors to deliver care that is safer, more affordable and more equitable.
On the education side, I serve as Director of Health Systems Science for the OHSU Internal Medicine Residency Program, a role I've held since 2020. In this capacity, I oversee TIS (Teaching Improvement Science), a longitudinal curriculum that teaches residents how to identify problems in healthcare systems and lead meaningful improvements. I also direct the Health Systems Projects that every internal medicine resident completes during their training. Since 2024, I've expanded this work as Director of Graduate Medical Education Health Systems Science for the entire Department of Medicine at OHSU.
I'm also OHSU's site director for Students and Trainees Advocating for Resource Stewardship (STARS) a national program I've been proud to lead locally since 2018. STARS engages medical students and trainees in thoughtful, evidence-based stewardship of healthcare resources, helping ensure patients receive the right care at the right time without unnecessary tests or treatments.
My research sits at the intersection of medical education and health systems science — specifically, how we can engage trainees in improvement work that leads to better outcomes for patients. I'm deeply honored to have received several teaching awards from our residency program, and I remain committed to making OHSU a place where both patients and the people who care for them can thrive.
