Biography

Dr. Amy Stenson attended medical school at UCLA and graduated in 2004.  Between her 3rd and 4th year of medical school, she completed a master’s degree in public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.  She completed her residency training at UCLA in 2008 and was on the UCLA faculty for 4 years.  During that time, she developed and directed the UCLA ob-gyn global health program and was actively involved in resident and medical student education.  She spent about a 1/3 of her time in Uganda and other parts of Africa working on surgical capacity building, education program development and interventions focused on improving maternal morbidity and mortality.  At UCLA she oversaw a resident clinic for underserved patients focused on STI treatment and prevention, supervised learners at the County Hospital (Olive View), was the faculty advisor for the medical student International Health Interest Group and was a member of the Residency Education Committee.

Dr. Stenson joined the OHSU faculty in 2012 and has been primarily focused on resident and medical student education.  She was chosen to be a member of the OHSU “Your MD” curriculum transformation team that developed goals, competencies and objectives for the new 18 month preclinical medical student curriculum and then directed the Developing Human block, which focuses on the life cycle and reproductive health issues.  She has served as a college coach for medical students, an advisor for residents, and as a member of the executive education committee, the residency education committee, the core competency committee, statewide GME planning committee, the educator’s collaborative and numerous other education initiative at OHSU.  She assumed the role of Program Director for the ob-gyn residency in January of 2016.

Dr. Stenson is a full scope academic generalist at OHSU with a busy clinical practice.   She also has a clinical and research focus on vulvovaginal disorders, including vulvar pain and skin diseases.  She is involved in several research projects on vulvodynia and is one of three providers in the Program in Vulvar Health at OHSU which is the only one of its kind on the west coast providing care for women from Oregon, Washington, California, Alaska and Idaho.

Health and wellness are a primary focus for Amy and for her this means laughing often, cooking healthy and delicious meals most nights, getting enough sleep, enjoying work most of the time, drinking good coffee, connecting to her spiritual side, listening to good music, walking or biking to work, hanging out with friends, eating a little dark chocolate and finding time to move throughout the day.  Amy loves to spend time outdoors with her family (husband Shaun, two children Everett and Annalynn and Labrador retriever Tazo.)  Some of her favorite adventures include hide and seek with the kids in Forest Park, exploring the Oregon Coast, picnicking at the Sauvie Island summer farm concerts, snowshoeing on Mount Hood, picking apples in Parkdale, swimming in Opal Creek and taking fall color tours in Central Oregon.  She can be found hiking a new trail almost every weekend somewhere in Oregon.
