Biography

Alejandro Espinoza is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering under the mentorship of Dr. Peter Jacobs. He has joined the AIMS lab, where he is excited to investigate how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms can be leveraged to improve the lives of others by developing new technologies in the field of diabetes, telehealth, and beyond. He has witnessed others close to him struggle with diabetes management throughout his career, motivating him to pursue doctoral research in this area. His interests are broad and include the use of ML for other medical applications, such as early detection of seizures and cardiovascular conditions, in addition to natural language processing, computer vision, and data science.

 

Alejandro earned a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from Portland State University, where he focused his studies on signal processing, machine learning, and AI. Prior to this, he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Western Michigan University. He has industry experience as a data scientist building AI solutions for Portland-area software companies and as an industrial controls/robotics engineer.
