Division of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology
Two generations of pathbreaking research and comprehensive care
At the Division of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology, we’ve cared for patients and conducted innovative research for more than 40 years. We are pioneers in patient education, and we train the next generation of multiple sclerosis leaders. Our clinical, research and training programs have received national recognition.
What sets us apart
Research innovation: Division faculty are nationally recognized as research leaders. We enrolled patients in the first MS drug trial and launch studies rigorously testing supplements, diet and drugs.
Physician training: We’re one of the top fellowship programs in the nation. Exceptional clinical and research leaders are OHSU graduates who now work in some of the best university and hospital systems in the United States.
Active clinic: Over 2,500 patients get ongoing care at the OHSU Multiple Sclerosis Center. We evaluate nearly 600 new patients each year.
National excellence: The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has designated OHSU as a comprehensive care center.
Diverse team: You can work with highly trained neurologists, as well as a nurse, pharmacist, and physical, occupational and speech therapists.
Collaborative, supportive culture: Providers and staff work together within the division and across the department and OHSU to better serve patients.

Multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology clinical programs
In our division, you’ll find:
- Highly-trained specialists, including rehabilitation therapists and subspecialty experts in areas such as urology, gastroenterology and psychiatry
- A team that collaborates, meeting weekly to combine knowledge on challenging cases
- A diverse population, including patients who are military veterans and rural residents
- Expert partners, including physicians at the Portland VA Medical Center, a designated Veterans Affairs Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence
“I started my academic career at OHSU in 1997 as a neurology resident. Since then, I have seen tremendous growth in the Multiple Sclerosis Center and the university. Many of our trainees stay because the supportive academic and research environment here is one of the best in the country.”
Multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology fellowship and training
You can get state-of-the-art training in multiple sclerosis across the lifespan and in special populations. OHSU has:
A high-ranking fellowship program that was awarded the Institutional Clinician Training Award by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in 2019. Our curriculum includes adult and pediatric tracks, and experience caring for veterans.
A mentored training program for non-physician health care providers, including nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, and naturopathic physicians.
Multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology research
Work alongside researchers who lead groundbreaking studies. You'll have access to advanced imaging technology, including 7T MRI, to drive research innovation. You can also forge strong connections to basic scientists working in the Jungers Center for Neurosciences Research.
Some key MS research projects include:
- Studies to understand how cardiovascular diseases effect people diagnosed with MS, including the first study to use 7T MRI for this purpose
- A randomized trial of lipoic acid in progressive multiple sclerosis that showed evidence of slowed brain atrophy
- A study that identified a gene that helps myelin formation, potentially opening new doors for treatment of multiple sclerosis
- The first randomized controlled trials of a low-fat plant-based diet for people with multiple sclerosis
"OHSU invests in early-career physician scientists because leaders know that the next generation will drive discovery and improve care for people with multiple sclerosis."

Myelin research
A key area of MS research at OHSU is the formation, repair and protection of the myelin sheath, which is attacked in people with multiple sclerosis.
Antioxidants
Several faculty members have conducted research on lipoic acid and other antioxidants such as ginkgo and ginseng and their role as MS treatments.
Imaging innovation
OHSU researchers have used technology, including PET and OCT, to improve diagnosis and identify novel imaging markers for progressive and smoldering multiple sclerosis.
Clinical trials
Faculty are involved in groundbreaking clinical trials, including testing stem cell transplants and CAR-T therapies to treat MS.
Lifestyle medicine and complementary treatments
OHSU is the international leader in research investigating the effects of diet and exercise and other lifestyle changes on MS patients.
Vascular disease risk factors
Faculty study the prevalence of these risk factors in people with MS, including their impact on brain metabolism using advanced 7T MRI.
