Section of Integrative Neurology and Intraoperative Neuromonitoring
Two tracks of care and research committed to innovation
Our section includes two distinct clinical and research programs. Both are unique in their longevity.
Meet our faculty, known nationally for their expertise.
Integrative neurology
We combine conventional treatment approaches with integrative medicine techniques. This work has evolved from decades of National Institutes of Health funding.
The Oregon Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Neurological Disorders is one of the oldest programs of its kind in the United States. It was funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health for 25 years.
Intraoperative neuromonitoring
We've offered intraoperative neuromonitoring for 35 years. Our program is accredited by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists, Inc., and includes:
- Clinical services like real-time feedback and awake craniotomies
- Research on passive and active cognitive function

Clinical programs
Learn more about surgical services, as well as integrative work that incorporates acupuncture and other integrative medicine modalities.
Education
Our section leaders mentor trainees through affiliated departments at OHSU and other universities.
Research
Explore our research in both awake monitoring and integrative medicine, including studies on meditation and acupuncture.
Clinical programs
Faculty in our section have opportunities to provide care through both our programs.
Intraoperative neuromonitoring
Technologists and neurologists provide these services through our program:
- Real-time feedback to surgeons to minimize risk of injury in neurologic and orthopedic cases
- Monitoring during surgeries, like awake craniotomies
- A diagnostic evoked potential service for neurologic diagnosis and predicting outcomes of coma in the ICU
Neurology wellness clinic
Our Neurology Wellness Clinic combines acupuncture, supplements and other integrative medicine modalities with the latest scientific techniques. This lets us take a holistic approach to treating chronic pain from nerve, headache and musculoskeletal conditions.
Training
Our section faculty teach residents and fellows in neurology, surgery and anesthesiology. This gives trainees unique opportunities to collaborate across specialties.
We also mentor graduate students and post-doctoral fellows at OHSU and other institutions, including the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University and the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs at Pacific University.
Integrative neurology and intraoperative neuromonitoring research
Faculty and learners in our section can work with field leaders on clinical trials and research studies.
Integrative neurology research areas include:
- The effects of meditation and acupuncture on stress and pain
- How mind-body approaches like yoga and meditation may improve health and cognitive function
- The mental and physical effects of guided breathing
Intraoperative neuromonitoring research areas include:
- Using EEG or evoked potentials for brain computer interfaces, potentially outside of surgery
- Passive mapping of cognitive function using higher frequency EEG activity
- Active mapping using electrical cortical stimulation. This has expanded into studies of spontaneous language and supplementary motor area function.
- Using evoked potentials as a quantitative outcome marker for clinical trials
- Ways to reduce stress and increase empowerment during awake surgeries
- Better communication through brain-computer interfaces
