Innovators in Parkinson’s disease treatment and research

Faculty in the division of movement disorders are national leaders in the field. Our track record includes:

  • Performing the nation’s first deep brain stimulation surgery, establishing OHSU as a leader in surgical therapies for Parkinson’s disease.
  • Being early adopters of using high-intensity focused ultrasound for tremor—and we continue to lead innovation in ultrasound treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
  • More than 20 consecutive years as a Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence, reflecting sustained excellence in patient care, education and research.

What sets us apart

Exceptional physicians. We are a designated Center of Excellence in four major neurological conditions: Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Lewy body dementias  and progressive supranuclear palsy.

Practice-changing research. We support a large portfolio of research projects and benefit from the leaders in the Balance Disorders Laboratory, which has the highest number of movement disorder-related publications in the world.

Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders research

We offer dozens of research studies and  clinical trials at all times. We also lead our own pioneering basic, translational and clinical research studies, including:

  • Investigating the mechanisms of Lewy body formation using advanced models
  • Developing new drug targets and pathways to create next-generation therapies
  • Innovating in sensor-based mobility and gait monitoring
  • Conducting cutting-edge DBS and neuromodulation research

Our Balance Disorders Laboratory is known globally for its translational research. Lab investigators have the highest number of movement disorder-related publications in the world.

First in deep brain stimulation surgery

OHSU was the first health center in the United States to perform deep brain stimulation surgery.

First in high-intensity ultrasound

We were an early adopter of high-intensity focused ultrasound for tremor, and we are innovators in using this technology to treat Parkinson’s disease.

Top quality

Our 20 consecutive years as a Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence reflects the quality of our patient care, education and research.
