Treating and studying complex vascular conditions

We are affiliated with the prestigious OHSU Knight Cardiovascular Institute, and our faculty have diverse expertise and complementary clinical and research strengths across vascular surgery. Our strong clinical foundation includes open and endovascular techniques.

Clinical programs

Our clinical programs have comprehensive breadth across vascular conditions. Research is embedded in our care. Many of our faculty perform clinical outcomes research and translational work in genetic vascular disease. They also participate in disease registries.  

Northwest Genetic Aortopathy and Arteriopathy Program

To treat genetic vascular conditions, including Marfan syndrome and Turner syndrome, our program integrates:  

• Vascular surgery
• Genetics
• Cardiology
• Imaging
• Translational research 

The program has helped us become a regional referral center for inherited vascular diseases.  

Limb preservation clinic

Our program offers multidisciplinary integration and robust clinical volume. Faculty maintain expertise across open bypass and advanced endovascular revascularization and have clear limb preservation treatment pathways. We also have expertise in treating vascular compressive syndromes. 

Wound Care Center

Our Wound Care Center offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy for all forms of chronic wounds. Our surgeons, a podiatrist and nurses provide virtual encounters and e-consults. 

Vascular lab

Our vascular lab performs 12,000 to 13,000 studies annually. These include: 

• Venous studies
• Arterial exams
• Dialysis access studies
• Cerebrovascular exams
• Visceral artery exams 

Collaboration

We collaborate with programs and divisions across OHSU to better treat patients, including: 

• Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Clinical Nutrition faculty to treat people with diabetic foot ulcer
• Cardiovascular faculty to support heart care and heart failure services
• Division of Surgical Oncology faculty for tumor resections with vascular involvement
• Division of Pediatric Surgery faculty to treat genetic vascular conditions 

Training programs

Our vascular surgery training programs include both a vascular and endovascular surgery residency and a fellowship. 

Medical student away rotation opportunity 

We also offer a four-week away rotation for fourth-year medical students interested in an integrated vascular residency. We are the only quaternary referral vascular center in Oregon.  

Visiting students will experience clinic-based procedures, a vascular lab, operating and hybrid room operations, and endovascular suite procedures. Students will function as an integral part of the inpatient care team and participate in an educational conference.

Research programs, studies and clinical trials

Our research projects include studies to better understand inherited and familial vascular disease and improve treatment for patients. 

We are studying phenotypic variation in these diseases, including Marfan, Loeys-Dietz and vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, to learn differences in presentation, progression and surgical outcomes.  

With the OHSU Vascular Genetics Translational Research Lab, we are combining high-resolution tissue analysis with clinical phenotyping to better understand arterial fragility.  

We are building a multi-institutional infrastructure to further this research. We hope to improve the timing of interventions, refine operative strategy and predict durability of vascular repair for patients with inherited and familial vascular disease.
