Advanced GI/MIS Fellowship
Learn advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques for complex foregut and bariatric conditions
Explore intensive, focused training in minimally invasive surgery for complex foregut and bariatric conditions in this non-ACGME fellowship. You will also gain exposure to:
- HPB/solid organ surgery
- Abdominal wall surgery
- Robotic and laparoscopic approaches
- Advanced endoscopy
Since it began in 1998, our fellowship has graduated more than 50 fellows, with half in academic practice.
Fellowship objectives
Become proficient in areas of upper gastrointestinal surgery beyond the scope of a general surgery residency, as defined by the American Board of Surgery. Your training will cover:
- Complex Foregut (esophagogastric), bariatric and HPB/solid organ surgery, performed with minimally invasive, open or robotic approaches
- Minimally invasive esophagectomy and gastrectomy for malignant and benign conditions
- Laparoscopic/robotic repairs of paraesophageal hernias
- Heller myotomy and per-oral endoscopic myotomy for achalasia and surgical treatment of gastroparesis
- Laparoscopic and robotic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch, SADI and revisions
- Minimally invasive pancreatic resections and solid organ resections (adrenal/spleen)
Fellows also can perform therapeutic endoscopy procedures and abdominal wall surgeries during elective weeks.
How to apply
Apply through The Fellowship Council.
To qualify, you must have completed an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency program.
If you are still in a general surgical residency program, you must:
- Be eligible to take the American Board of Surgery’s Qualifying Examination
- Provide letters of recommendation on your performance and good standing in the residency program

Fellowship leaders
Stephanie Wood, M.D., FACS, is the program director. Dr. Wood is a general surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery of the esophagus, stomach and gastrointestinal tract for benign and malignant disease. She also performs bariatric surgery, and robotic surgery. Her clinical research focuses on esophageal cancer and benign disorders of the esophagus.
Andrea Stroud, M.D., M.S., is the associate program director. Dr. Stroud is a general surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive bariatric surgery. Her research centers on the psychosocial factors related to quality of life following bariatric surgery. She is particularly interested in treating obesity in adolescents.

Q: Does the program have additional requirements?
A: You will be part of the surgical team and interact with general surgery residents and medical students. You will:
- Join clinics according to faculty schedules and assume primary responsibility for diagnostic workup and treatment plans
- Participate in teaching opportunities in the daily care of surgical patients
- Attend conferences and meetings including weekly grand rounds, a morbidity and mortality conference, a weekly tumor board on foregut service, a monthly benign multidisciplinary foregut/bariatric conference, and a monthly bariatric/foregut citywide journal club
Q: What should I expect for salary?
A: Salary is based on your PGY level coming into the program.
