Continuing Medical Education and Events

Attend events to build your surgical expertise

We offer continuing medical education for faculty, staff and trainees through:

  • Grand rounds lectures
  • Spotlight discussions held before grand rounds lectures
  • Morbidity and mortality conferences

All these events are advertised weekly in the Surgical Bulletin and the Chair’s Update.

Objectives and goals

After you attend a continuing medical education event, you can complete a survey to provide feedback on your experience. You need to complete the survey to receive credit for attending. Look for survey links in our Grand Rounds calendar invites.

Morbidity and mortality conferences

Many of our programs require regular attendance at morbidity and mortality conferences. A calendar invite is sent to everyone in the Department of Surgery prior to the events.

Grand rounds and spotlights

Grand rounds enhance your clinical knowledge and add to your technical skills. The events:

  • Support evidence-based practice and multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Frequently integrate emerging research and its translation into excellent patient care

Grand rounds are typically about an hour long. Many begin with a brief discussion spotlighting topics in research, quality and cultural humility.

Research and quality topics are offered from 7:25 to 7:35 a.m. and do not count toward continuing medical education credits. Cultural humility spotlights are from 7:25 to 7:40 a.m. and do count toward continuing medical education credits.
