Department of Surgery Research
Advancing surgical care through research
Our faculty are at the forefront of research to improve surgical and interdisciplinary care for conditions treated with surgery.
We are studying how to:
- Improve surgical decision-making
- Improve trauma care
- Improve cancer screening and outcomes for patients with cancer
- Design a system for pediatric emergency management during disasters
- Better understand inherited and familial vascular disease and improve treatment for these patients
What sets us apart
Our surgical researchers work collaboratively to tackle the most challenging problems in human health. Together we:
- Drive impactful research that improves care for neurological disease, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, rare genetic disorders and infectious disease.
- Train the next generation of surgeon-scientists through a highly competitive research residency program and a dedicated surgery research elective for medical students.
- Partner with fellows across programs and divisions to accelerate discovery and career development.
Research breakthroughs
Rodney F. Pommier, M.D., FACS, FSSO, has authored research in surgical oncology and has made the following findings:
- Removing the primary neuroendocrine tumor (NET) improves survival, even among patients with inoperable liver metastases.
- Lowering the debulking threshold for small bowel NET liver metastases and pancreatic NET liver metastases from 90% to 70% has equivalent survival.
News and awards
Robert Eil, M.D., won a 2025 OHSU Faculty Excellence and Innovation Award to support his research in developing a new treatment for advanced colon and pancreatic cancers using engineered immune cells. He was also named OHSU’s New Innovator of the Year for 2024.
Research projects
Faculty in each of our divisions have research projects focused on surgical care and the conditions treated with surgery.
In cancer research, these include studying:
- Predictors and outcomes of patients between 80 and 89 years old who have had esophagectomy surgery for esophageal cancer
- How patients feel and function after minimally invasive esophagectomy
- How to use systemic methods and hepatic arterial infusion to deliver different types of chemotherapy in treating patients with liver-dominant and unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma
- Differences between tumors and the tumor environment in patients with early vs. late colorectal cancer
Other research includes:
- Studies to better understand inherited and familial vascular disease, including phenotypic variation, and improve treatment for these patients
- Studies in solid organ transplantation and hepato-pancreatico-biliary malignancies and expanding access to transplantation
- A project to help people with upper arm amputations regain function through targeted muscle reinnervation
- A system that enables quadriplegic patients to perform daily living activities using eye control
- Developing a regional and national system for pediatric emergency management during pandemics and disasters, emphasizing the use of telemedicine
Research labs and centers
Donald D. Trunkey Center for Civilian and Combat Casualty Care
Named after the late Dr. Donald D. Trunkey, emeritus chair of surgery at OHSU, the center connects trauma providers and multidisciplinary investigators from across OHSU and the VA Portland Health Care System.
Multidisciplinary GI Oncology Research Group
The group studies primary and metastatic cancers along the length of the gastrointestinal tract. It is particularly focused on identifying biomarkers that inform or optimize patient care and predict and ultimately prevent cancer recurrence.
Surgical Data & Decision Sciences Lab
Led by faculty in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the lab advances the interdisciplinary field of surgical decision sciences by combining data science and clinical knowledge.
