Research expertise

The department houses the Oregon Brain Bank and conducts research in molecular pathology, hematologic malignancies, placental biology, cardiovascular disease, aging and neurodegenerative disease. 

Led by Guang Fan, M.D., Ph.D., and vice chair for research, Yabing Chen, Ph.D., MB.A., FAHA, we advance digital pathology and machine learning through collaborations across OHSU and partner institutions.

We cultivate a culture of belonging, collegiality, mentorship and continuous learning. Our specialists partner with clinicians, researchers and trainees across OHSU, the Portland VA Medical Center and Shriners Hospitals for Children. We serve communities through free screenings, second opinions and outreach across Oregon.

Meet our faculty

Guang Fan, M.D., Ph.D., is department chair and director of clinical laboratories. Dr. Fan is a hematopathologist whose research focuses on hematologic malignancies and the application of AI and machine learning to digital pathology. She leads the department’s efforts to build a collaborative, innovative academic environment and is a champion of faculty development and belonging.
