Biography

Tarek Salaway, M.H.A, M.P.H., M.A., has served as executive vice president and chief executive officer of OHSU Health since December 15, 2025. 

With 28 years of leadership experience across diverse health care systems in major west coast markets, Mr. Salaway brings a strong record of developing and executing a broad range of strategic initiatives, in close partnership with clinicians and staff, to advance high-value clinical programs and ensure exceptional care and services to the patients and communities served. 

Mr. Salaway joins OHSU from Kaiser Permanente, Kaiser Foundation Health Plans in California, where he served as senior vice president, leading strategy, operations, relationships and community affairs for the Marin Sonoma and the Golden Gate Service Areas, three medical centers with several hundred thousand health plan members, working in close partnership with The Permanente Medical Group to ensure Kaiser Permanente is positioned to achieve a high level of success in quality, service and affordability. 

Prior to his time at Kaiser Permanente, Mr. Salaway was chief executive for Providence St. Joseph Health in Mission Viejo, California, a 523-bed tertiary, Level II trauma center with campuses in Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach. As chief executive, Mr. Salaway led efforts to align clinicians and staff across several clinical institutes in service to the community, resulting in growth and improved performance in quality and patient satisfaction. In this role, he led teams focused on achieving benchmark performance in reducing hospital-acquired infections, cesarean-section rates, time to treatment for stroke, hospital readmission rates and more. He also spearheaded the expansion of important hospital and ambulatory services based on community need and market responsiveness. 

Before joining Providence St. Joseph Health, Mr. Salaway served as the chief operations officer for the Keck Medical Center of University Southern of California and University of Southern California Norris Cancer Hospital, leading its transformation with his team to a robust major academic health center, with more than $2 billion in revenue. Before moving to the University of Southern California, he led cardiovascular and neurosciences services for Stanford Health Care, overseeing both inpatient and outpatient services, working closely with faculty on the delivery of high-quality services that enhanced the organization’s reputation and rankings. In addition, Mr. Salaway served as system director for clinical performance for Providence Health and Services and director for heart and vascular services at Providence St. Joseph and Providence Holy Cross in Southern California. 

Mr. Salaway holds master’s degrees in health care administration, public health and international relations from the University of Washington, and bachelor’s degrees in political science and French literature from the University of California San Diego. In addition to his extensive professional experience, Mr. Salaway has served on numerous community boards to help ensure access to care for vulnerable and marginalized people in our communities.
