Marian S. McDonagh is a professor in OHSU's Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology (School of Medicine), where she is Associate Director of the Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC). Dr. McDonagh has extensive knowledge of evaluating comparative effectiveness of drug therapies, and is expert in applying standard methodologies and involved in developing emerging methodologies for systematic reviews. She served as principal investigator for work done by the EPC for the Drug Effectiveness Review Project from 2003 to 2018. The project was funded by a collaboration of state Medicaid agencies that commission reviews to evaluate the evidence on effectiveness and safety comparisons between drugs within and across classes. In addition, she conducts evidence review work for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)’s Effective Healthcare Program and other groups, including the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs. Dr. McDonagh teaches a graduate level course on systematic review methodology and conducts empiric methodological research to develop methodological standards for comparative effectiveness reviews. She is interested in comparative systematic reviews methodology and evidence-based medicine as applied to competing interventions and has led over 80 systematic reviews and was co-investigator on over 30 others. In her time at OHSU, she has served on numerous university committees, including the Investigational Review Board (IRB), the Women in Academic Medicine Committee, and the Faculty Senate.

McDonagh received a PharmD from the University of Washington, a BS in pharmacy from Oregon State University, and completed a residency at the Carl T. Hayden Veteran’s Affairs Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. She served as a research fellow at the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York, York, England, and currently serves as affiliate faculty at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy and Oregon State University College of Pharmacy.
