Biography

Jesika Gavilanes is an educator and a leader, has been involved with simulation for two decades, and has been at the Oregon Health & Science University for over 25 years. She received her Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in 2007 and is a candidate for her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy through Portland State University. Jesika was selected as a member of the Fellows Academy for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in 2024. In her role as Director of Operations Jesika supervises over 90 team members, including SimOps Specialists, Sensitive Exam Teaching Associate (SETA) Trainers, SP Trainers and their teams. With over 60,000 learner encounters every year, she and her teams collaborate in order to maintain standards of best practices for healthcare professionals.

Jesika has been in multiple leadership roles regionally and globally and currently serves as an invited member of the SSH Governing Council, is a Co-Chair for the American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes (ACS AEI) Administration and Management Committee, and serves as an incident commander on the Academic and Research Emergency Operations Committee at OHSU.

Jesika is a lead faculty member with OHSU Global and has presented in Thailand, Panama City, Singapore, and Mexico, along with locations across the United States. Jesika is a member of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) and the Association for Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) having presented numerous posters and podium presentations at their annual international conferences. She will be inducted as a Fellow into the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Academy at the upcoming International Meeting for Healthcare Simulation (IMSH).

Jesika's passion is on empowering teams, psychological and physical safety of those around her and with a focus on learner equity. She is a strong advocate of the integration of social justice, equity, diversity and inclusion into simulation programs and curriculum with the goal to make an impact on health equity and addressing systemic racism.
